This name "Cheng San" was dropped and treated as toxic after 1997 election. The PAP overplayed their credbility. Made Goh Chok Tong halfway switch GRC to Cheng San (yar, half way through campaigning ... they set the rules). And super intense smearing campaign led by LKY even though he wasn't the PM. And the slogan "if you let Tang win, you will lose your PM, you want country to lose its leader?".

Same tactic they used in Punggol GRC in 2025 GE. Well.. sinkies are easily swayed... Ofcuz PAP will win. They only need to put their key appointment holder in the GRC and will guarantee they win.

So sad… he was the very embodiment of political controversy in Singapore’s formative years. I reckon most folks today have long forgotten the Nassim Jade saga and its stormy implications...
JBJ got sued many times when he tried to point out such issues, Singaporean Parliament later passed laws to restrict/remove the right of appeal to the Privy Council. This ultimately abolished all remaining appeals to the JCPC by 1994

LKY once he made rest of old guards other than himself step down immediately go and placed his cronies everywhere liao. Even made his own son CEO of Singtel (but to his credit, he generally well-regarded unlike his elder brother).

During the 1997 general election, Cheng San GRC was the setting for a fierce contest between teams led by WP leader JB Jeyaretnam and education minister Lee Yock Suan.

On polling day, several PAP politicians who were not candidates in the constituency (including then PM Goh Chok Tong, DPM Lee Hsien Loong and DPM Tony Tan) were present at polling stations in Cheng San GRC. According to the WP, they were shaking hands with those who were waiting in line to vote.

The party alleged that this violated the parliamentary elections act as unauthorised personnel are generally prohibited from polling stations in order to prevent undue influence and intimidation of voters and staff:

  • Section 82(1)(d): "No person shall wait outside any polling station on polling day, except for the purpose of gaining entry to the polling station to cast his vote".
  • Section 82(1)(e): "No person shall loiter in any street or public place within a radius of 200 metres of any polling station on polling day."

In response to the incident, the attorney general gave his opinion that while the law prohibits unauthorised persons from waiting and loitering outside, in this case the unauthorised persons had been inside the polling station, meaning no laws had been broken. Quote: "accordingly, unauthorised persons who only wait or loiter inside a polling station do not commit any offence under the act", "someone inside the polling station cannot be said to be within 200m of it".

No need to speculate on hypotheticals. Hypothetical is a waste of time in politics because it is simply in your imagination only. This is already history and in the past. Just take note of what happened in the past and understand the true nature of PAP (at least for the younger generation, whom the PAP has controlled projection of their image to them.)
I don't know about the social studies syllabus now. But during my time the syllabus was basically other countries bad, pap governance good lol and we must learn from other countries ' mistakes

He chosed not to return.
He abandoned us
You want him to be like Alexei Navalny, come back and get imprisoned just because he spoke out against his country's leaders?

Of course, won't be so jialat. But 1 thing for sure, just look at how JBJ was sued until bankrupt just because he pointed out a lot of morally ethical issues happening in Singapore.
He will suffer the same fate too.

Just look at how they tried to fix him, just because he pointed out the Nassim Jade scandal. Alot of people still remembered what happened back then. Even went after his family members who were innocent, as well.

I remembered him. He got sued cause at wp rally he mentioned he make a police report cause pap leaders call him a chinese chauvinist. Jbj also suay, he got sued cause on stage he introduced tlh and say tlh make a police report against pap leaders.

The government then changed the law to sue TLH wife for lawsuit damages after TLH transferred his assets to his wife and fled singapore .

Actually quite pity him and jbj because of a statement make during a rally become bankrupt. Wife also kena.
