Final Fantasy Tactics meets Tower Defense? Sounds like a fantastic formula for strategy fun, but this first iPhone/iPod Touch game from Square Enix has "rush job" written all over it. So many of the device's strengths are ignored in favor of what looks like shortcuts taken to get the game on the App Store in time for the holiday.

Now, that's not to say the game is not functional. It is indeed a wholly playable strategy game loaded with Final Fantasy atmosphere. The game sticks to the essentials of the Tower Defense formula. Before a line of enemies streams into the battlefield, you must set up a gauntlet of defenders. Your defenders all have different roles to play, such as the archer that dishes out damage over a wide area and the berserker that does great physical damage to multiple targets, but cannot touch aerial enemies. There are also crystals you can deploy in the field to support your defenders, such as a yellow crystal that ups the attack speed of units inside its range. You can also upgrade your defenders with money earned by defeating enemies, increasing their potency.

Once you have your gauntlet set up, you tap a button that unleashes the horde. Enemies start their march through the gauntlet and your defenders automatically attack. If the battle isn't going well, you can install new defenders while the enemy moves. If a certain number of monsters get through the field, you lose.

There are two big issues with this game, though. The control does not take advantage of the touch screen in any reasonable or expected way. Instead, you use a virtual pad on the bottom half of the vertically oriented screen to move a cursor and place your defenders. It works, but it is clumsy in comparison to other Tower Defense-like games on the App Store, such as Fieldrunners. You can tap the field to move the cursor to that position, but since the field is so small, you rarely get the square desired. It's just such a weird solution to something that never should have been a problem. The other problem is, well the field size because of the gigantic on-screen controller. You miss detail because everything is just so small, including the in-game text.

At least you can turn the screen sideways to blow up the playing field, but then you lose the controller. In the widescreen mode, you gain a speed button for hurrying the action. The zoomed visuals turn unfortunately blurry in landscape mode, too.

Crystal Defenders is not short on content, though. There are 300 stages spread across three chapters. The first chapter is just the basics. The second chapter introduces the crystal supports for your defenders. The final chapter juices the difficulty with some intense enemies.

We should be thankful we're getting iOS leftovers. :D Where is Chaos Ring for Android? :(

That's exactly why we need more and more powerful hardware. :( Because there's no standardization, Android can only rely on the brute force approach. It's less a concern about market fragmentation, but the hardware differences. :(

Like what the news point out. How come they can do it for PC, and not for android phones?

Dev simply became lazier?

Exactly, same reason as my post.

There are baseline requirements for PC games, on the box u see what hardware is required to run the game properly. Not to mention that most PC gamers are more tech savvy than Android users - Trust me, there are tons of noobish Android users out there. Anyone trying PC gaming knows to upgrade hardware to keep up with the new releases. Evidently this isn't obvious to some Android users.

But on Android Market, less the Android version, every hardware running the same OS version can download the games that might be made for much better hardware. Take a gander at the market comments for Dungeon Defenders and you'll understand. And look at the released Android hardware thus far - Mostly cannot make it in terms of raw graphically processing power.

No matter how good the devs are, it's impossible to cater to stupid people who can't read. And having to support several devices with different specs makes their job exponentially harder.

Some stuff works on HTC device, some doesn't work on Samsung. There's also Motorola and LG devices with their idiosyncrasies. Motorola models come with slightly less common 854x480 screen resolution. Some have unconventional file paths naming, have different amounts of RAM. Some have 1ghz processors but have an older gen. Some have 800mhz processor that perform better than 1ghz. Some have fast processors but don't perform as well for gaming graphical use. Some have hardware controls, most don't.

It's a goddamn nightmare. Yes, if you are coding a normal app it's slightly simpler with Google's provided APIs. But if you're talking about a game with tons of resources/graphics/models/memory requirements.....And add to that stupid users who think their phone model is still the bee's knees. :D

If "most" of the Android hardware released is powerful enough i.e. the baseline is akin to a Tegra 2, then we would see less "complaints" from the devs. At least they can concentrate on solving the other smaller problems than to deal with comments like "Why does this game run so slow on my ancient phone?"....

Alas, that is but a dream. :D

not in market, only directly from gameloft.

most gameloft games store their data on sd card. yes, most allow move to sd for the apk as well.

PS Suite for Android announced....anyone still looking forward to play PSOne games on Android?

Oh well, since we can't get more iOS ports, we can play old PSOne games.

Oh wait a minute, we can already do that on PSOne emulator. :(
