I've got an Android tablet for my elderly parents to consume media like YouTube.

Since I don't stay with them, what's the best way to set it up before giving it to them?

Specifically, for the Google Play Store, should I log into my own Google account to download apps, or should I create a separate Google account for them?

Additionally, are there other setup steps I should complete beforehand?

Any preferred setting I should use for the elderly?

Thanks

Create a dummy account safer. If they kana scam wont affect your gmail etc.
oh. Ok.
Then ok to use their own google account?
I set their gmail account for them previously for email purposly only.

Can I use that or really need to create a seperate account just for apps?

Thanks

Everything should be isolated, and you can login on your device still for MFA authentication, security changes etc. for Google too.

Yes, use the one for email purpose works fine too.
Check the settings to have everything like security settings etc. setup and done so to reduce risk to minimal.
Importantly educate them to not anyhow download etc. too.

are you refering to if I use my personal google account on their device, it will not affect me when i login on to my same google account on own devices?

Basically, use your existing gmail to setup the tablet.
Then login to your devices so that any login/user account controls, settings etc. you can monitor since it will be prompted.

Devies locally will need you to educate them to not anyhow download/click links and check with you if unsure.

education is key, can consider the resources here
https://www.imda.gov.sg/how-we-can-help/seniors-go-digital

also, do regular checks on the tablet, to make sure no dodgy apps installed

if possible, teach them to access youtube via firefox browser; help install ublock origin extension, as it removes ads from most websites

also enable private dns in android settings

if they prefer to use their "mother tongue" to search, type, etc., help them to install the respective keyboard language

debloat and remove apps not needed

Do regularly check-ins for their devices to ensure no funny apps, and possibly run through their chat app likes WhatsApp, stock SMS apps etc. too if applicable, to ensure they are not getting scammed unnoticed.

Turn on all protection settings for Google too on the device.

Thanks.

I will not be installing any messaging apps. This is purely for media consumption.

Anyway for me to remotely check their devices?

I use AnyDesk but requires setup first. And as with all remote devices, sometime still need physical access to reset/reboot connectivity.
