Anyone is also using the StarHub UltraSpeed (10Gbps)? I am so frustrated. (Solved by upgrading ONR firmware.)

can i know why many of you sub to 10G? what the reason, cause me want to sign up a new plan

access your NAS often?
download tons of stuff?
plan ppl at home that use of bandwidth?
For me, it was the bundle promo and total cost. 10Gbps was after the fact, when the family wanted Cable + Netflix Premium + D+ + Viu.

Just putting some Monthly costs for some services:
Disney+: $15.98
Netflix Premium: $25.98
Viu: $86.21/12
Cable: Entertainment+ ($30.56) + Asian+ ($30.56) + TV+ Pro box ($15.98)
Just the above, $126.24 already. Can be lower I know, but just pulling standard prices to illustrate some of the costs.

In the bundle, there's still Premier+, Sports+, Home phone line, Internet. All in for $110. So no brainer since these are all wanted.

Access the NAS does not really need 10Gbps internet, unless you have 10G NAS and want to have access to it from outside at high speed.

For most people: none of the reason above.

1) Main reason -- it is cheaper or only slightly more expensive than using current 1Gbps/2Gbps plan becasue of the contents bundle. This is especially true for those people who want EPL -- Starhub 10Gbps plan is cheaper than the plans out there. Same for Starhub Homehub+ bundle if you need the contents bundle.

2) It may not be cheaper but only slightly more expensive than using current 1Gbps/2Gbps plan. This may well be true for ST/SH/VQ 5Gbps plans and VQ 3Gbps plans.

3) Some people want to try new things. 10Gbps + WiFi 7 is a good combination for some people. Take note 10G capable true WiFi 7 routers are pretty expensive now. Going with the ISP's 10Gbps plan may be the cheapest way to get the combination.

4) Maybe less than 5% (or even 1%) of the people fall into your reasons.

Thanks for your input

I had got port forwarding info from other credible local source.
Called up 1630 (sales) and route to their technical dept (not-1633) for double confirmation.
Other smaller telco also had addon for static ip for port forwarding.

Simba fibre 10Gbps, yes very cheap, but this CGNAT required too much efforts to achieve port-forwarding, via tools/utilities, for IoT, the best option is OpenWRT in compatible router with WireGuard plugins.

By early August I will be on Ultraspeed 10Gbps, now looking for cheap offers on second router in Carousell for ethernet backhaul Easymesh.
I had already placed taobao orders for aircool 10G switch, SFP+ multiple-mode modules, and LC-LC cables and connectors and faceplates. Future-proof network infra for room-to-room.
Can share the model of the 10G switch? Thanks

to add on, it is not recommended to access the NAS remotely without VPN either, and when you add in VPN encryption, most consumer NAS can't even fully utilise 1gbps

Depends on VPN access method. I find Wireguard works with minimal performance penalty.

Alternatively, tunnelling works - Tailscale, Cloudflared. These don't have a speed penalty.

I think when you say minimal or no performance penalty, you are mostly referring to 500Mbps/1Gbps internet, right?

When it comes to 10Gbps, I do not think Wireguard VPN will be able to catch up (unless you use a high end CPU --- I do not how high end that CPU needs to be).

I do not think Tailscale or Cloudflared can handle 10Gbps either...

Indeed, if you do not have the need for contents bundling, for Starhub, you may want to continue with your existing 500Mbps/1Gbps or go with the 2Gbps plan at S$39 per month.

I have secondary Starhub 500 Mbps line (out of contract since 2020) and I will keep that one at S$30.45 per month..

Then I am using Singtel 1Gbps now for my main line, paying S$40.65 per month, my original plan was to keep it at and Singtel did offers me 1Gbps recontract at S$39.90 per month (or "upgrade" to 2Gbps plan at S$39.95 per month). But since I want to try out new things -- I decided to go with Singtel 5Gbps plan at S$49.90 per month.

Another reference -- same reason why people signs up Starhub 10Gbps plan -- because of the EPL and other contents bundle.

I just signed up starhub 10Gbps. Main reason is the bundle with premier league, sports+, netflix. I don't think I would sign it if there wasn't any bundle.

I think it is not a bad idea to stick to M1 500Mbps at S$30.45 per month.

1. SIMBA 10Gbps (same as 2.5Gbps) is now at $29.99 (including GST) per 30 days, and no need to pay for NLT charge and ONT charge. They used to advertise the old 2.5Gbps plan as S$20 (not including GST) which is S$21.80 per month (but in reality higher due to the cost of NLT charge and ONT charge).
https://simba.sg/broadband

Reference for the old SIMBA 2.5Gbps plan -- real cost is higher than S$21.80 per month.

2. Not so sure where you can subscribe to MR 200Mbps plan. Is it a special plan?

3. WC ONR can be bridged (new one is either ZTE ZXHN F620 or Nokia G240, old ones were from Huawei). For G240 you have to get the superadmin login info using pm (say nice words to the brothers who have the info) as the info is not posted to the forum. For ZTE ZXHN the info is clear (same for old Huawei models). You can go to the WC forum to know more.

Generally, when people speak of VPN performance penalty, they are referring to low performance VPN protocols also. Until Wireguard came to the scene and gave almost line speeds, OpenVPN and a 1/3 (200-300Mbps) was considered the best. Many people today are still thinking of their past experience with L2TP, IPsec and IKEv2 as "VPN protocols", and because of low end hardware their thinking of VPN speeds are are stuck in those levels.

Tailscale is documented to surpass 10Gb/s in Apr 2023. Linux bare metal. ;)
https://tailscale.com/blog/more-throughput
Testing parameters include i5-12400 and Mellanox NICs, on wireguard-go. Code has been integrated into the main tailscale project already.

I think people just hold old ideas of VPN and inferior 3rd party VPN solutions (i.e. through some paid service) and extrapolate that to setting up remote access.
If I'm dialling back to my own home, I'll be using Tailscale, Wireguard or one of the other direct tunnel solutions for security and ease/convenience of setup.
