Browsed through but didn't see anyone ask. Does Apple Pay require Data Plan? I tried switched off my mobile data and wifi and use Apple Pay but it didn't go through.
Technically speaking, you don't need data to use Apple Pay because all your card details is encrypted in your iPhone. However without data, you will not see the log of transactions made by it until you turn on data or wifi.
was there an error message when you try to make payment ? Did you tap the camera side of your phone to the reader or at least the top of it phone to complete the transaction
Yeap agree technically it shouldn't need data.
After I switched off data on my phone, I proceed to bring the phone near to the Paywave machine. And everything looks normal on the phone as if I managed to pay. But the Paywave machine does not acknowledge and continues to ask the user to swipe/tap/insert (the instructions).

Was the nfc on?
may need more details to understand the problem.
did the phone auto wake up when u hold near reader? or u just double-click to wake it up?
what was your phone showing on screen? "Hold near reader to pay" or "Pay by Touch ID"?
did u see the tick icon?
which part of iphone did u tap against the reader? the top part or back cover?
(if u tap the back cover of iphone, u may have missed the nfc antenna location.)
It auto wake up when i hold near reader.
Yes i saw the tick icon and pay by touch ID
The top part.
Basically it worked as per normal.

Yes it should be. Firstly, it requires your fingerprint via Touch ID to activate the payment so no one could use your phone without your finger.
Then also instead of your credit card number being transferred over to the Contactless reader, the Device Account Number is used which is vastly different from your Credit or Debit card number. This number is unique to the phone and only payment can be made using your phone. Only the last 4 digits is revealed so no one can actually use it in the first place.
Compared to Paywave or Paypass where anyone can take your card and make payment on your behalf, no signature, no PIN.
i too feel that this is safer than Paywave as you need to use your Touch ID to make purchase.
use Apple Pay at NTUC Fairprice and the auntie was surprised that it was so fast!
ntuc aunties should be very familiar with paywave/paypass already.
i feel that apple pay almost same speed as paywave/paypass.
