As someone who goes on longer rides (60-130kms in a day) and who likes to do self supported touring when possible, I would never touch disc brakes. They are too prone to being damaged and you need specialist tools to repair them. Not to mention trying to find the parts and associated expense.

V-brakes are easily repaired by the user and the parts can be found almost everywhere at really good prices. Stopping power is about the same or so I am told.

My current and future bikes will always have V-brakes for the above reasons.
just what I wanna hear..thks

i think the only "advantage" for disc brake is if you ride until the rim is muddy(not likely for most ppl)......

i can feel the braking control more with disc brakes. But it looks cooler tio bo :s13::s13:

disc with mud how?

No, the other key advantange is you don't have to change your rims when you have worn down your braking surfaces.

To be fair, they do last for quite some time, but every time you squeeze the brakes onto rims, you do scratch them. Worse when it's sandy/dusty so it acts as abrasives.

In theory, it's much less hassle and cheaper to replace disc rotors than an entire wheel (which necessitates replacing the hub and all that or rebuilding the wheels with new rims). In practise, it should last long enough.

I have done tens of thousands of kilometers on the same pair of rims and this has never been an issue. I guess it might be an issue if you are in very sandy conditions but you would still need to ride tens of thousands of kilometers for that to be a factor.

i thought in wet weather v-brakes is as good as no brakes compared to disc?

LOL! Where do you get your ideas from?

I am still waiting for you to tell me how full fingered gloves help with that problem some guy had a few pages back.

Another advantage I think for disc brake wheelset is that it's tolerance for an untrue rim is higher to remain ridable. Something like if some sort of accident happened during the ride and the rim became untrue, a rim brake wheelset would have a smaller buffer before the rims to be in contact with the brake pads and become unridable to make your way back home or to the shop while a disc brake wheelset does not have brakepads in the way.

With V-brakes you can adjust the arms to give you that extra space before the pad(s) touches the rim.

If you're knowledgeable and well-prepared you can always carry a small spoke tool with which to true your wheel enough so that the rim goes back to its proper shape. It's actually not that hard to do on a flipped upside down bike while using the brake arms as guides.

If you do crack your rim then even having disc brakes will not help you because the wheel may collapse under you.

On self-supported loaded tours, most riders will ask to have wheels made with more spokes such as going from a 32-hole to a 36-hole. That's an incredibly strong wheel.

that is true if you go off road like bukit timah trail, otherwise vbrake is fine for city ridding in singapore. on the other note, you will never see rigid frame or v brakes off road at BT. people with such skills in sg mostly died off already.

likewise disk brake for roadbike or city ridding is just lame... if you use mechanical disk brake it makes you look like a fool. what's the point? there is no necessity unless someone proof it to me the better performance, weight advantage or aerodynamic properties. furthermore rebleeding hydraulic brake is troublesome even for home mechanic.

Can see a bit on the sides. When i look at my selfie it is quite obvious. You all never have this problem?

You must be incredibly narcissistic to be looking at your selfies that often!!! :s13::s13::s13:

I have a bit but that's because I don't normally ride during the day time.

I would ignore it. If you want you can slather on sunscreen or change to night rides.
