Hello everyone, *

I'm looking to go from my foldie (a java fit 16) to a road bike.*
Been researching around and narrowed it down to 2 models.*
Merida Scultura 400 @$13xx
Colnago Strada SL 2016 @$1600

My budget is pretty much around $1600.
Main usage will be for weekly exercising and taking part in cycling events.*

I'm probably still going to need to budget for pedals and shoes. *But that's another matter. *:)*

Now I can't decide between the 2. Both 105. But not full groupset. I do like Colnago better because they have a red frame. *Haven't test ride yet but soon I suppose.*

Any opinions which would be better pick? Why? And why not? Thanks
merida is more racy, the colnago abit more relaxed from the numbers

Rumour for the day : Wiggle to buy online rival Chain Reaction Cycles?

http://road.cc/content/news/178413-wiggle-buy-online-rival-chain-reaction-cycles

The UK’s largest online cycling retailer, Wiggle, is reportedly set to buy its biggest rival, Chain Reaction Cycles, according to trade publication BikeBiz (link is external), citing “multiple sources.”

BikeBiz says that neither business would confirm that a deal was in the pipeline, although it adds that its sources say it is “highly likely” to happen within the next week.

Both retailers were launched in 1999 and have their roots in bike shops with owners who were quick to spot the potential of the internet for cycle retail – Portmouth’s Butlers Cycles in the case of Wiggle and, for Chain Reaction Cycles, Northern Ireland’s Ballynure Cycles.

In 2014, Wiggle had 2014 sales of £167.9 million while turnover at Chain Reaction Cycles was £153.4 million the same year.

AdTech Ad
Wiggle is majority owned by private equity firm Bridgepoint Capital, which acquired it in a deal worth a reported £180 million in 2011. Since then, there have been periodic rumours of a sale or stockmarket flotation.

There have been reports since then that the private equity firm has been planning a sale of the business or a stockmarket flotation.

Last year, Wiggle moved to a new warehouse facility in Wolverhampton, having outgrown its Portsmouth premises, although its headquarters remain in the Hampshire city.

Chain Reaction Cycles, which sponsors the points jersey at the Aviva Tour of Britain and the An Post Chain Reaction UCI Continental team, remains owned by the Watson family.

Would any deal between the two need to be referred to the Competition & Markets Authority? We'd guess not, even the combined 2014 sales come in short of the £295.2 million that we calculate Halfords derived from cycling in the year to March 2015.

That's because while Halfords derives all its sales from the UK and the Republic of Ireland, much of both Wiggle's and Chain Reaction Cycles' sales come from abroad - a reported 40 per cent in the case of the latter.

Halfords says it has a share of between 20 and 25 per cent of the UK cycling market, estimated by Mintel to be worth £1.5 billion.

For your budget, 2nd hand/used. Or top up to get the average range.

Dahon Route launch price $499. Usual price $550.

I have the Dahon Speed D8, bought at $799.

Broadwalk and i are using crius master v which is 9 speed, with alivio shifter and sora rd. We bought it for close to $600.

At a premium (extra 200+ paid to 3rd party for parts trade in) i upgraded the components to 10 speed tiagra bar shifter, ultegra chain, hollowtech crankset 53t and 105 rd + 10 speed cassette 11-25t.

So far very satisfied. But may be out of your budget.

If you go togoparts website market place, you can find some certain brands of your budget but the components are mediocre.

It depends on your usage.

But generally, a budget of $500 should get you a decent entry level foldie. Just don't expect too much. Dahon and Tern are decent, other brands like Vert/Crius etc are also pretty ok. If you want it to be faster, then you have to upgrade the components.

And that's where the poisoning starts. :s13:

Hi rarenick,

Do you mind if you can share where you went to upgrade and trade in your parts?

I second rarenick on the Crius Master V. The stock bike is quite decent already for the price. Bikeactually still running the $565 promo or you can try searching Carousell for online sellers

U can always buy a lower specs bike but whether u will find satisfaction in the long run is a consideration. Just dont regret your choice eventually.

Think of it in another way. Metal are expensive, and these are precision engineered components. By setting a low budget to save money, u are going to get a very lousy bike without even talking about brand differences and the folding technology involved. Later u might complain the parts are giving u hell of problems etc, and wasting you more money, time and effort.

If want to bring into Mrt, consider those models that can push and roll around rather than having to carry.

True. But getting frame alone and buy the parts may be very expensive than u buy a whole bike. I did a simple calculation with my crius bike. Frame is 275 + 250 drivetrain & shifter + 250 wheelset + 75 brakeset + 100 handlebar & stem + 50 saddle & seatpost = 1000

Above are considered rounded down and havent include small items like quick release, paddle, etc. For me my spending was just 800 to get the same things. Of course, there are things that i could have upgraded to my liking if i were to buy each component separately.
