everyone say is very hard for ppl who are working in gahment sector to jump to private sector. is that true based on ur experience? especially those more technical roles (eg, economist, statistician, etc) while the focus of private and public sector might be very different (profit vs policy research), i guess the underlying techniques required is still the same... do these ppl have difficulties jumping to the private sector as well?

Yes it's true

Unless you working in GIC or Temasek or MAS

Or the job you apply for is exactly the same job scope of your current job

Better be specialized or be avg but can do wide range of stuff ( in the beginning) ?
After getting a Job with a job scope then can hone ur skills in that area?

1. What is the salary range like for a front office analyst (research and compile data for fund manager) in a local bank? For a avp in same bank to be in back office vs front office, is the salary range largely different although same corporate title ?

2. You've mentioned LinkedIn as a good source to be headhunted. However in LinkedIn we are usually linked to colleagues. It looks too obvious if we start putting job details n scope into our profile. Any advice to what level of details do you scan for in LinkedIn ?

3. Where are the best place to look for a banking IT support lead role? Specific portal or headhunter to deposit our CV to?

4. When you interview a potential candidate, what characteristic are key?

5. On compensation, if the underpaid candidate did not stake expected amount but simply say he wanted to be on par with market, do you honestly offer up to current market rate based on his experience and job scope or you will offer less? E.g.. Standard 20% jump

6. In banks, are salary decided against corporate title or job scope? Or combination of both?

Many thanks!
1) I don't do front office recruitment so cannot comment. But yes salary very different. Front office bonus can be very big.

2) length of stay in current/past companies and job title mostly

3) efinancialscareers

4) reason for leaving current/past companies, salary, what person is looking for in new role

5) depends on person experience but generally standard 15 to 20%

6) both

Better to start as a generalist then specialist than vice versa.
Can learn more things then decide what you like to do

For points 2 and 4,

if a candidate is unlucky, left the company due to poor performance over a short stint, do u still filter out these kind of candidates?

Poor performance could be due to job fit issues. Thus important to look at overall track record.

linkedin is quite a good platform for you and headhunters.

i am quite active on linkedin, constantly updating my profile as i got more job scope/responsibility or hit a certain milestones/achievement.

linkedin also provides many interesting articles and resources for you to learn and opens up your perspectives.

follow groups and companies that interest you, pick up news and culture and all these information will help you in your jobhunt and interviews should the opportunity arises.

although all my jobs were not from linkedin, i do get quite a few emails/contact from headhunters.

Starting pay quite low but pay rise is exponential when you get more years of experience

Thanks TS for steeping forward and bringing these information to the masses.

A question based on your experiences in particular to the infocomm sector in FIs.

What advise would you give may be in terms of optimal skill set, experience, age(?) for a cyber security individual to look at breaking into FI market at a 100k per annum, 3-4 years from now, looking at a total of 6-7 years of relevant exp?

Around what level of executive responsibility will be pegged at this kind of price?

Will local FIs be able to budget for this kind of salary scale? vs. international FIs?

Thanks in advance!!! :D

Get certified. Enter before age 35 ideally. At least 5 years experience
