What do hiring managers gain from low-balling? when HR is the one who decides your pay

Management Trainee!

This.

Ok first of all, it depends on how the company is structured. (do note this does not apply to SME companies)

In some companies, the budget is controlled by the manager, in other companies it is controlled by the HR

But lets say for example, if the budget is controlled by the manager, he will have to think about how is the best way to spend the recruitment before the end of the year/financial year.

Do note the money cannot be brought over to the new year, so any surplus is useless to the manager.

So let's say he is given a budget to spend to hire people and the budget is say 500k (annual salary)

He can choose to hire
2 people at 250k
5 people at 100k
10 people at 50k
etc

Do note he does not need to spend all the money together one shot. Maybe he feels he hire one person at 250k, then keep the rest in case someone resign from the company.

Another thing to note is, just because he can spend to hire 10 people for 50k doesn't mean he can

Because there is another thing called headcount. Basically it means if his team max headcount is 10 people, he cannot have 11 people or more in his team, regardless of whether he has a recruitment budget or not.

HH: I work for a bank and I've heard many times not to accept counter offer but I received one which is too hard to turn down.

What's the best way to tell the other end that I decided to stay?

Management trainee = you get rotated to many different departments within 2 or 3 years.

Maybe 6 months in one dept, 6 months in another, etc.

Then after 2 or 3 years you decide which dept you want to work in

Does HR mark down a new recruit in a bank in terms of pay with no degree but years and years of experience to the point where his fulfillment of the job quality is that of a degree holder?

Usually no, but must have equivalent qualifications ideally (like ACCA) and must also have more years of relevant experience.

(degree holders need 4 years, this person maybe need 7 to 8 years)

But If only got O levels, A levels, etc and no progressional cert, a bit hard to progress to a very high level.

main reasons not to accept counter offers are because... if the company had valued you, they would have recognized your effort and gave you the appropriate increment or progression along the way. to take for a staff to thrown the letter then, willing to up the offer? goes to show how much the company values you and how much you've been low balled/short changed.

how would you feel?

but if like you mentioned, the offer is too good, then go ahead and take it. stay another 6 months and use the improved conditions to negotiate for new job. ;)

Actually, the reason why you should not take the counter offer is very valid because

1) You can forget about ever joining the other company ever (because your details will all be in their HR database)
2) If the interviewer joins another company, you can ever forget about joining that company
3) Your long term prospects in your current company is not good (because you technically got "promoted" because of the counter offer)

I give you a very good example, last year i was representing a very experienced lady (almost 60 years old), i literally put her in front of 10 companies, as you probably guessed, some companies were put off because of her age, but others did not, and among the 10 companies, 8 actually interviewed her, and she got offered by 4 companies.

And the reason why she didn't get offered by the other 4 companies was not because of age as well, but because they could not afford her asking salary.

willing to bet that the lady is minimum supervisor/management level and above. If it's executive level or below staff she won't have such luck.

to add on to point 3: Likely since the company know you want to run; a streetwise manager will start looking to replace you. The counter offer is only a short term solution so that your seat is filled in the meantime.

My advise is: take the offer of you really think it's so good, but your days are numbered.

so ur first job is v impt ? better to accept a low paying job in an industry which you sure you will be in for the next 10-20 years than accept a high paying job in an industry which you don't see yourself there in 10 years' time? (counting public sector aside)

I'll do the one in bold 9/10 times, it's easier to jump to a competitor doing 95% of the same job and get 20% pay increment than to jump to an unrelated industry

The counter offer comes with a 2 year comp guarantee. The prospective employer does not know I had received a counter offer. They made me a verbal offer and I told them I will consider. They gave me 2 weeks window to decide and I told them no.

All details in your resume can be checked by companies like First Advantage

Its only whether the future potential company bothers to do it or not.
