My laptop has vents at the bottom and fans too. that's why when fans get loud I know the error going to occurs.

The service centre also advised me not to block the vent which I pretty sure I did not and even buy a stand to double confirm.

Vivobook is a family. What model? Perhaps you can dig up some information on it too. The few newer generation Vivobooks I've seen are passively cooled, and while I did consider it when laptop hunting last month, ultimately I settled on a Thinkpad since my computers are bought to last 5-8y at least. So far none of them have failed me the last few years. My mom is still using my former 2008 MBP that I handed her when I upgraded to the 2013 model, and that's going strong now in its 13th year!

A bit strange that laptops only have vents at the bottom, since that's the easiest to be blocked when you put the laptop on your lap - that's why you call it a lap-top. Plus I wouldn't want hot air blowing directly at my legs so I would never consider a laptop with that design. Moreover, physics teaches us that heat rises, so it's really puzzling to attempt to blow hot air down since it's going to just rise back into the laptop. :s13:

You can try, but if they do not wish to entertain anything more, take it to CASE and see how it is resolved. It's between them and you.

Think for now wait for the laptop to come back.
Than maybe approach CASE for assistance.
Lemon law is within 6 months of purchase you can ask
for resolution for faulty product.

File for return ah.

In the mean time, just look for a more reliable lineup.
The laptop is designed to make you replace your laptop within 2 years.

thank you, will definitely contact CASE if the Asus can't give me a good and reasonable answer.

Happy new year everyone and thanks for all the help and input

I can't remember the model, since I buy it for office use so not very particular and aim for the cheapest and acceptable spec.:s13:

As wisely said above, it is expensive to be cheap.

And since you obviously can't be bothered to check the invoice or the service slips for the model information, there's nothing more we can do to help either.

Good luck with your attempt at CASE. Hopefully they do not consider closing the lid as 'non-standard usage'. But it's a known fact that heat damages components so they die faster.

Not I don't want to check, everything filed in to office.

Anyway mine is a X413F

Ah ok. I usually keep a scanned copy of my big ticket items in my email and my documents folders for ease of retrieval, and knowing our local retailers and support service levels, you would very likely have had to furnish the invoice for servicing anyway. Thought it was pretty standard for many people.

Think I saw this laptop in the shops while hunting to buy my replacement. Other than the plastic chassis, I don't recall being very impressed by it.

1. Reading the manual found at the support web site, the initial cautions have too many warnings about heat for me to be wary about it. Never a good sign imo. They even caution against using it on your lap - so how do they expect working people who travel to use it in cabs, buses, and planes?

2. While there does not appear to be an explicit prohibition on using it closed, the first instruction in the usage section, even before powering on the laptop, is to "Lift to open the display panel". Taken with their emphasis on heat in the cautions, it could be construed to mean that they never intended for it to be operated with the lid shut.

Good luck with your service and claims process. You should contact CASE to lodge a request for refund under the lemon law, but you might have to monitor their serviced laptop to see if it manifests the same problem again, and furnish video proof that their servicing with all those parts replacements did not help matters. If there really are problems with thermals, it'll manifest itself soon enough. Should suffice to prove that even after servicing and parts replacement, the problems still occur - and should pass the lemon law bad product tests.

Personally, I would push for the refund and use it to get something else far more reliable. Too many red flags for me, and the customer service attitude you relayed here does not inspire confidence in Asus laptops! Remember, it's expensive to be cheap. That said, it is very possible to get decent deals still. Just a a real life case, someone just posted in the Lenovo/Ryzen thread he just ordered a Ryzen 5 T14s with 3y warranty for just over $1k with their official discount codes. ;)

Why not? I use my setup with both displays on. It's mounted on a dual-arm monitor stand, with one holding the laptop and the other the monitor.

In terms of thermals, most consumer class laptops are designed to be operated open, not closed. Since that is the expected usage pattern for those laptops.

It's in the office when people started to hook up to larger external displays and then begun to shut the laptop. And those laptops are designed differently: Just look at the Thinkpad, the Latitude, and the Elitebook - their vents and thermals are differently designed.

As for CASE, invoke lemon law and ask for their help to look into it.

Yes, use lemon law. ASUS notebook has nice design but is never a lasting. Service center work is below acceptable level.

Update

Update on my case

Asus asked to me use the vivobook opened and I'm not very happy with the answer.

contacted CASE and sent in all relevant documents.

First, CASE tell me they are not in the position to say if a notebook can be used open or close. If want to pursue, I have to attend the court session and defend myself etc.

Secondly, the notebook was bought in Gaincity, so I have to go back to gaincity.

HAHAHAHA, then gaincity will go back to asus centre and story repeat.

I gave up in the end and use it as it is. :(

Think you need someone who is technical to dispute further.
CASE can't advice since they also no idea what is wrong with the notebook.
Sadly you have to use it as it is unless you intend to sell it.

Reason why asus and acer cannot gain stronghold in the laptop market.

Asus just outright copy apply apple design methodology lol. They dont even know that it gonna hurt their market share.

Apple soldered ram
Asus go and soldered ram

Apple no headphone jack
Asus zenbook no headphone jack

Apple mac air passive cooling
Asus vivobook becum passive cooling with 10th gen intel lol

Tldr. Subscribe to business laptop thinkpad/lattitude/elitebook. No malware, they are able to maintain reputation because they know what is at stake

IMHO.

Notebooks that are designed for Windows 10 can be used with the lid open or close.
Why? In Windows 10's Power Options / System Setting, there is a feature where one can set what happens "When I close the lid". There options for On battery and Plugged in - Sleep, Hibernate, Shutdown & Do Nothing

The model I saw has the hidden style vents (below the lid) and also underneath. Those resources I read online is not to block them - generally speaking, is to use something else to do the job.

E.g. Which of these statements sounds crazy ?
1) The road was blocked by cars.
2) The road was blocked by the road.

Do keep a copy of the owners manual. How things can be argued is that if the owners manual did not specifically mentioned it, then it is doable.
If the service center informed otherwise, ask for a letter from Asus head office.

Some things your can try.
1. Use a notebook cooler. The forced air effectively will makes the notebook "behaves" as though the lid is open if the lid close is highlighted to be the issue.
2. Look at the settings and vary them in ASUS Battery Health Charging and Intelligence Performance Technology.
3. Was the battery changed? Could be a battery overheating issue in specific conditions.

I think it is likely that it is the battery charging algorithm. Perhaps consideration is not taken into when the lid is closed.

1. I bought a notebook stand no fan kind, and yes after they tell me I need to use my notebook open then they advise me to buy external fan if want to use it closed

2. I already tried them and asus service centre too.

3. as per service report, no battery change. motherboard and keyboard was changed instead

Even with CASE, i think try to apply the lemon law for my case is too draggy and troublesome(attending court etc).

take it as i suay lo and hope everything will be better.

Happy Chinese New Year GUYS!! hope all of us huat ah:s12:

Do take precautions as battery can becomes hazardous when there are heat involved.

Try talk to the shop, I still feel the issue reside with Windows.
Laptops that are ship, they use image of Windows on the laptop.
Could be bad image so not a fresh install/clean of Windows.

Not to mention bloatware.
