I love this sub forum a lot but this is bugging me a lot.

Why do we state Budget and then requirements and then get recommended a rig to max out the Budget in almost all cases ?

It's like going to a restaurant and tell the person I am hungry and have $500 pls recommend me dishes. No one does that.

Wouldn't it be better to just state usage requirements for the rig and get the most value parts recommended ?

that's because the applications you use evolve over time. your system does not. so you need to factor in future proof. Please close this nonsense thread.

I'm sure the guys here know how to maximize a given budget. Don't tell me you're contend with a gtx750 when your budget is $1.5k.

Unless you specifically mentioned as low as possible with max budget of $xxx, people here will normally try to list out a build that maximizes the budget.

but for a rig used like 99% for normal work stuff or cs go/league/dota, wouldn't the 970/980 be a white elephant?

People over here help with free will. Give them what you want and they will maximize it for you. They are not here to study your needs and requirements. I can't fault what you think but you need to spare a thought for those helping you as well.

Imo :

Stated budget can give other people to know what kind of budget build u can go for, requirement is what you wanna do with this rig, so we can evaluate which component goes well with ur requirement as well as reaching to budget fits.

As for the restaurant case i wont say is like the same. since there are so many PC component other there with varies pricing and in a shops. (sorry its so hard for me to explain this to u T-T)

And if we just give u the parts and requirement for the most bang for bucks can, but end up evenutally u are making others some kind of headache if the total pricing does not fit what u can afford it.

example: i need a video rendering PC.

Comment A: the parts that cost 2K
you : sorry I cant afford this amount, can u kindly give me another rig
Comment B : the parts cost about 1.7K
you: can it lower down the value?
end up comment C: cant you give us your budget so we can fit the maximum bang for bucks component for your needs?

All I wanna say, not all Singaporean wants to pay super high prices for PC component unless they are willing to fork out a lot of money for that system build.

I guess what he's trying to say when he used the term "future-proof" is more like being able to run potentially more demanding apps/games in future without having to upgrade too soon.

Why budget is important is ultimately allowing the people who recommend know how much they can play around with the different parts to provide the best value for performance for that particular usage.

You can't just recommend "value parts" without having a budget can you? A gtx 970 is value so is a gtx 750ti. So if the person wants to game, do we recommend a 970 or 750ti? The 970? What if it's not within his budget? So the 750ti then? But is that really the best value? You'll never know without having the budget stated.

p.s the graphics cards listed is just for example purpose. I don't really know if they are really the best value for money as of now. But I guess you get the point, having two high "value per performance" cards of varying price range.

It's like $3 can eat a meal, $100 also can eat a meal. Your requirements is like make me full can Liao. How to advice?

Unless u say I want to eat steak and can spare $50, people will recommend u the best restaurant for that value. To maximize your utility.

ah... i understand now..

i would like to throw out conflict of interest etc but then I would argue for you guys the price difference between a DIY and AIO is already significant enough.

Thats not gonna happen.

The restaurant analogy simply does not apply to pc diy components.

There is a need to balance out what we can suite and cater to a budget that one has.

Example, you cant buy a 5rm hdb flat if you do not have that money. Although yes you still need a roof to stay.

With that said, would you believe us as a guru to give you the recommended needs? Such as if we think you need this and that and in the end it will cost more? Or put it this way, would you buy a recommended pc at 10k?

Do note that pc building is pretty much the sky is the limit. If there is no budget given, we simply exhaust the best we can get. Without even looking at the cost/performance ratio. We would simply just buy the most expensive 980ti in market rather than the cheapest. Why? Cause we believe in good parts used in dept of a gpu or a mobo etc.

Pc components have many variables. We cant argue the fact that it has many other things to select from. If a person only has a budget of 1k. We work towards a goal that we can build a pc, yet perform to its expectations. Such as there were a few asking for a budget rig, simply because he do not have that much money, but yet he wants a rig to play dota. So we can recommend something that can play dota. Like we push more budget for gpu or cpu or mobo that probably gonna be best for the person.

Rather than outright slamming him that we give all the recommendations and it is not within the budget. At the end of the day, we waste our time typing out the recommendations, finding the best deal in town, and lastly it does not seems attractive to the TS. In the end its a wasted attempt to even asked.

I was used to be giving specs recommendations with a few bros here. Its not easy to keep track with deals in market continuosly. Till i find myself keep doing reviews. I have left this job to the hands of other forumers whom kept in touch with pc pricing.

You certainly missed this:

I'm looking to build a fresh gaming PC with a budget of $1500 - $1700

Mostly playing League Of Legends, watching videos and surfing the web. Don't need monitor and peripherals but need OS

PC for these relatively light usages can be easily accomplished at just under $850. :)

You state 500 as a budget that means to others that you can only spend a max of 500 for it and you want to spend as close as possible to 500
Only you know how close to 500 you are willing to spend

Sometimes.....

Sh!t do happen.. :s13::s13:

Funniest part about my problem? On a Q6600 + HD5850 rig, can play Siege but DOOM will lag like mad, on my laptop using an i7-2630QM and GTX 560M, can play DOOM reasonably well but cannot start Siege at all :s13:

If you had the option of buying an AMD R9 370 GPU and an AMD R9 Fury to play DOTA2, which GPU would you prefer to spend your money on? Ever heard of the phrase "overkill for your usage"?

It's like going to a restaurant and tell the person I am hungry and have $500 pls recommend me dishes. No one does that.

This is exactly what happens when you go to a retailer (Challenger, Courts, Harvey Norman, etc) and ask them to recommend which branded PCs (Dell, Asus, Acer, HP, Lenovo, etc) u shld buy.

Wouldn't it be better to just state usage requirements for the rig and get the most value parts recommended ?

And as the person building the rig, how would u determine which are the most value parts? Isn't it back to the problem of max budget per part?

Well it all depends on what you plan to do with your computer. If you plan to do office work and as well as some light gaming like Dota2/LOL/CS:GO etc, with a provided budget of 700-800, most cases the budget will be maxed out. That is to achieve the most fps for your causal gaming, anything under will probably not give u the best experience in your gaming.

On the flip side. you try providing a 3K budget for the same requirements, and what you fear suddenly no longer exist. In fact some will rebuke you and kind and nice people like moneyface will prolly recommend/spec out you a build that is under 1K.

In short, in most cases if you see a budget maxed out, it would be that the budget is only just enough to hit the desired performance.

On the other hand, you max out budget on branded PC also not enough to hit desired performance. :s13:

If you state this, I wonder if you've actually paid attention to the content in the threads. :s8:

I feel that most of the recommendations actually do what you say, and they tend to recommend ppl to "get the most value parts" based on their usage requirements. They use the budget as just a guideline. Most recommendations I've seen don't max it out, and even advise ppl on where to save. :o

The only exceptions are in the cases where people specifically state they are *NOT* looking for a value build.
