Those of us here who offer advice do so according to what the OP request. If the OP has a certain budget in mind, we will offer advice to fit that budget.

It is not for us or you to decide for the OP how much he or she should or should not spend.

I have a i7-4790K rig which I use mostly for surfing the net and two spare rigs in my cupboard (one of which is a full i7-3770 rig).
Overkill? Definitely, but unless you are paying for my rigs, it is none of your business.

I love this sub forum a lot but this is bugging me a lot.

Why do we state Budget and then requirements and then get recommended a rig to max out the Budget in almost all cases ?

It's like going to a restaurant and tell the person I am hungry and have $500 pls recommend me dishes. No one does that.

Wouldn't it be better to just state usage requirements for the rig and get the most value parts recommended ?

to correct your analogy most people walk into a restaurant with $20 and want an appertizer, a cold dish, a hot dish which is finished wih a desert at the end

let me give you an example yea:

I have $7-800 to spend and I want to play some AAA titles, Overwatch, FPS intensive stuff at 1080p at 60fps. In addition I need the rig for internet browsing, video watching and to be able to work on it if I have to.

that's because the applications you use evolve over time. your system does not. so you need to factor in future proof. Please close this nonsense thread.

I agree this is a nonsense thread. Becos the general consumer is not able to spec the system precisely.

E.g. For a enterprise server, based on its application, we calculate and spec the server brand, no of core, processor generation, number of hdd, total disk size, raid level etc. We already worked out the price based on those spec, then we ask a quote from the vendor and choose one that give us the best value.

Are u able to spec at that level and then u irregardless of the budget? The easiest is to ask someone the max he wants to spend, then we work towards there.

For a consumer set up, I might spec something like, I need a system that supports my usual workload of Edmw with 20 concurrent tabs and vlc running at the background playing FLAC. I need to play the following games at xx frame rate, yy resolution. For network, I need a dual port 1G card, supporting zz packets per Sec (Ave packet size to be zzz)

In the Resturant analogy, u already know what u want, hence the food u order is the specifications of the dinner (e.g. Ribeye Steak, medium rare, mushroom side dish)

Please close this nonsense thread

Nope. If you only want a computer for word processing, we will recommend one for it.

If you walk into a restaurant and only order salad, you will only be charged accordingly even if you have a million bucks to spend.

Computer usage = what you want to eat (salad, steak etc etc)

Computer components (recommendation) = where to eat

Simple as that...

Typically budget is flexible whereas usage scenarios are more or less fixed.

Word processing with 10k budget? Can be done WITHIN budget.

6 displays for gaming at X resolution maxed settings with 1k budget? You know where the issue is.

I want to buy a car, budget $1mil.
Will you recommend me a Kia / Toyota?

People want the best "bang" for the "buck". The best "bang" can only be derived if you fix the variable "buck"

chill chill, a round of drinks for everyone posting here!!

1. Many active forumers here (esp. those that kindly gift their time and knowledge) are geeks. By geek I affectionately mean people who like to spend time on computers.

2. The recommendations are enthusiast selections. I.E. they are in the bang-for-buck or maxed-out specs end of the spectrum.

3. There is a skew towards gaming builds and an emphasis on GPUs. Builds can be unbalanced as a result. Many geeks are also gamers.

This is such a horrible thread. If one states a budget, of course we maximize the budget. How else we supposed to do this?
