anyone knows if AT-HDC5 is available for Sale liao ? :D
Last check like no news at all.

The last time I have checked on Treoo's website, local stocks has been delayed until July period. Not sure what's happening on AT SEA's side but maybe Stereo can come in and provide us with an answer from their distributors. Maybe for Japan side wise, the HDC5 series has been selling so well that production status wise the supply cannot keep up with demands.

Just curious, BA based IEMs need burn in? I have my belief, but I keep seeing people mentioning burning in their BAs kinda intrigue me.

It seems like everything must be burn in these days, even handphones :s11:

"Burning in" would mean getting your brain and ear adjusted and accustomed to the sound signature of your gears combo. ;)

BA IMHO does not need as much burn in time as dynamic drivers. BA sound sig is usually like or dislike on first listen. Personal opinion. :)

Cheers.

that is called "you are conditioned to the sound of your combo".

anyway, first and foremost, nobody would be listening to burn in tracks.

secondly, by the tradition of "using your music to burn in", is not as effective as using proper burn in cd or tracks (based on my qualitative findings for the past 3 months... and still counting).

back to topic, dynamic drivers tend to benefit more from burning in. however, demagnetisation for both BA and Dynamic drivers is crucial for maintaining and delivering consistent original (or intended) signature of the sound.

If you have read my CK100PRO unboxing impressions + previous CK series compilation review summary on Head-fi, I had personally mentioned under that review thread that for many of the BA driver CK line-up series models that I personally own, its pretty certain according to my ears I have encountered lotsa positive changes after hitting ard 150 - 300 hrs on them. The CK9 their 1st BA type model was one such example, during the first 100 hrs the overall sig of this phones was pretty dry and sibilant/peaky, but after reaching ard the 300 hrs mark the midrange and soundstage kinda opened up, mids texture got relatively smoother annd treble peakiness was slightly tamed. (it has ard the same kind of brightness as the CK10 model though the latter is still more liquid/refined in both mids/treble regions)

The CK100 (non-PRO ver) is also another one such example. Can find alot of examples on chinese community forums such as Mobile01/Erji.net where alot of fellow owners complained that the CK100 sounded relatively peaky or weirdly sibilant in terms of its overall signature traits during the beginning. However those who have personally heard my CK100 before during last yr's Head-fi meet (and we had 1 guy who got deeply poisoned by my set and immediately went eBay to look for one, lols) would prob tell you otherwise in terms of their listening experience.

It is prob one of AT's most successful BA IEMs ever to grace on the market (at least in terms for HK/Taiwan/China market side) even when compared to the current IM series line-up, its overall signature after been properly burnt in has this liquid/smooth-sounding char with a very euphonic sounding traits (albeit coloured in a slightly warm sense) in terms of vocals rendition capability and with very decent soundstage/imaging properties as well. Upper-mids/treble properties is not as bright as CK10/CK100PRO/IM02 after proper burnt in, but has very good treble extension for a triple-driver BA. (can refer to Joker's review on Head-fi)

For my IM02, after proper burn-in sessions of ard 200 hrs +/- I also find that the bass quantity has improved, not so lean sounding anymore and soundstage details/dynamics has improved quite abit considerably. Not sure whether it's the cable that got burned in or the drivers themselves, but in my own words I would say burning in does apply to balanced armature based IEMs as well, just prob not as obvious/fast as compared to dynamic IEMs.

CK100 IS FAPS FAPS FAPS PLSSSSSS :s12::s12::s12:

Anyway, for BA IEMs, i have a slight bias to believe in cable burn in, and not the actual BA driver burn in.

Taking reference from 2 BA CIEM that has been demagnatised (one brand new, the other about 500+ hours burn in), and 3 exact same cables.

1st Cable was "demagetised" and burned in
2nd cable was not demagnetised but burn in
3rd brand new cable for control purposes.

major differences were noted between each cable.

In summary of my findings, the base sound signature of the CIEM was found to be consistent between CIEM (not much variations found) and throughout each cable.

However, the differences are mainly in the staging (1st cable have depth and layering), imaging (more smooth and coherent), speed, clarity (1st cable sounded the most clear, whereas 3rd cable sounded as if there's a filter in front of the vocalist), and lastly, harmonics (1st cable performed the best).

I firmly believe in cable really makes the most difference for BA.

Whereas for Dynamic driver... it is totally a big difference when simply comparing between a brand new and a fully burn in of at least 600 hours.

*btw, some people believe in burning in, and some don't.

I personally only believe in keeping an open mind and try things out. If don't try, i will never know the result. If i dont keep an open mind, nothing will work to make my IEM or headphones more enjoyable.
Simply just try out, and let your ears decide.

Demag!

Dynamic driver has magnet, right? And how to demag a non-ferrous material?

Can you provide link to the BA/dynamic driver demagnetization you mentioned? So far, I had read about demagnetization "improving cable quality" which usually goes together with cryogenic treatment but not so for drivers. otoh, I did read about demagnetization rendering speaker drivers non-functional.

Whoa! Now I'm enlightened. Thanks for sharing your points.

<jk>Afterwork when home, I'm going to burn in my wife's hair dryer for 300hrs so that it will sound more rounder and tame the brightness. It drives me nuts whenever she uses it :s13: </jk>
