leaning towards getting a creative x7 to connect to my t40. anyone using the x7 can give reviews about it? ok to connect to my t40 or get better speakers?
U shld be upgrading ur speakers. No point wasting a good soundcard/DAC by pairing it with mediocre speakers. Only think about the soundcard after u have settled on a pair of good speakers that fall within your budget.

Logitech 5.1 is good and not that ex.
Comparing with expensive 2.0, clarity might lose out. But a 5.1 for surround sound sure win any 2.0 or 2.1 speakers.
Depends on what you really need. Play game use 5.1 is jin song

Okay maybe let's break it down this way:

If u r into gaming, Swans M50W would be the best for u. Strong bass, average mids and treble. Good for fps games with explosions and gunfire and fights.

If u r into movies, up ur budget to get Bose Companion 5. Bose is very well-known in the home theater audio arena. For about S$599 u can already get a 5.1 system (though their Companion 5 system is virtual 5.1 surround system outputting 5.1 sounds using 2.1 speaker setup). Bose Companion 5 also already has a built-in DAC, so very all-in-one kind of setup.

If u r into music, better to get studio monitor or bookshelf speaker setups. Audioengine A2+ would be good for u. Paired with a decent soundcard like Creative SB Z, would be very good already.

ah alright. i thought it was a free set of speakers that comes with the x7 and not an x7/xm7 bundle.
I guess it's ur call since it's your money to spend. Just pointing out that the Creative bundle may be very overpriced for the performance it delivers. Studio monitors may be a better option for u in place of these bookshelf speakers, but then again audio quality is subjective and only u will know if u like the XM7's audio output after auditioning them.

I recommend getting your own DAC first then get your speakers... your music will sound beautiful.

Wrong bro, the other way round. No amount of Digital-to-Analog processing can give u sweet music or powerful audio if ur speaker cones and diaphragm cant even get up to task to convert these analog signals to audible sound.

Erpx my bad my bad~ cause I tot since TS is investing $500 for this setup, better to get a audiograde DAC then slowly upgrade his speakers accordingly. Plz forgive my silly theory. :s22:

It's okay. :s13:

At least u were spared the experience of buying white elephants only to realise after spending some money that for audio, what you pay for is what you get. Unlike pc parts, there hardly is anything that can be classified as bang-for-buck. Every set of speakers out there has a price point that justifies its performance, and even comparing between 2 equipment within the same price range is hard because different speakers have different sound signatures and are tailored for different purposes.

Hope u learnt something useful out of this that helps u in making wise choices in future with regards to audio equipment. :)
