am fairly new to singapore bowling scene. Only played at downtown east and marina. Can someone enlighten me on bowling balls? Why do you need to buy a personal bowling ball even though most centers have their own? Is it more to do with the style or particular ball?

and also wondering if anyone follows straight bowling?

Personal ball is drilled to your own fit and it will be comfortable for you unlike house balls where the holes are either too big, small or the span too far, too near. I cant carry 15lb house ball but my personal ball 15lb i can bowl >8 games non stop no problem due to the good fit and span.

Another reason is most of us play hook. We need a ball that has a core and reactive coverstock to grip the lane and give us the best carry and chance to strike. Frankly its difficult doing that using a house ball.

And straight ball mainly for recreational bowlers i guess because if you know the sport, the best way to strike is hitting the 1-2 or 1-3 pocket instead of throwing it as straight and hard at the head pin. Quite hard to strike with straight ball using house ball unless you have crazy speed to deflect the pins.

Hope this helps!

moatsy, thanks for clarifying. I now understand what you meant. Not sure how good or bad i am, but I could hit 6 strikes with a straight balling method the last time. Its usually around 5-6 each game. Should i just continue with my style or try to adopt to hook bowling?

Do you have any recommendations for balls for straight ballers?

Anyone know which is the best place to practice? Jalan Besar stadium or Leisure Park? I live near kallang, need something which is cheaper and reliable.

I live near kallang too. If you want cheap and decent, you can go to U-Bowling Supplies @ Jalan Pisang. Its near bugis. Kallang Leisure Park also has one, Ken Pro Shop. Would be slightly more costly though. I cant say which is better as its a personal preference which pro shop you go to and which driller drills you think is good for you. To each his own.

I suggest you get an entry level reactive ball package. $250-270 with shoes and bag. About 14lb-15lb if you can take the weight, but you'll get used to it in no time. I used to take 9lb house ball but went to 14lb straight with a personal ball.

Reactive ball allows you to play hook, it will grip the lane and have better carry due to the core in it. Any lighter than 14lb will not have a full core, so i recommend at least 14lb. You can also throw straight with a reactive ball.

Otherwise you can get a plastic polyester ball package for about $150-170 . But if you want to play hook it will be difficult and the ball deflection will affect your chances of striking.

Thanks. Will check out the jln pisang shop next week. So do you suggest me to change the style to hook or just stay with straight? I have a seen a few PRO american bowlers still use straight bowling. I know its not a favorite but there are good number of people using that method.

Any drawbacks in straight bowling that am unaware of?

Care to name a few of these bowlers? I'm not too sure if you're referring to spinner style as the ball motion is also straight but the ball is spinning and not rolling end to end.

I would suggest you change to hook. Strike percentage will increase if you're consistently hitting the pocket.

Straight ball just doesn't carry that well because the ball doesn't "drive" into the pocket, thus does not mix pins around the pin deck as much as a hook ball. So your striking chance lower. Also, if you're aiming the head pin using straight ball, chances are you'll leave splits more often.

But of course, still practice straight ball so you can pick single pin spares especially the 10 pin if you're a righty.

imho, bowling differs into the following budgets
Straight bowling - House ball / 1 X personal ball fits the job
Suitable for beginners, occasional players

Spinner / Helicopter / UFO style- House ball / 1 X personal ball fits the job
Less exp than the traditional playing style as the style only requires one ball..
Easier to master than hook as well..uses ball deflection to move the pins around (chances of striking even when not hitting the head pin is there)

Starting Fore finger position is normally at 6 o'clock and the release is at 12 o'clock

Risk of wrist injury is there as ppl tend to pre-twist quite alot (starting at 7 or even 8 o'clock)

Hook / Crank / Stroking - requires personal ball(s) to play well..
one strike ball, one spare ball, one new set of balls for dry lanes, oily lanes etc

Starting Fore finger position is normally at 6 o'clock and the release is at 3 o'clock

This style of bowling is the most exp of all kinds and the most difficult to master as well..the way the ball curves down the lane and the explosive impact on the pins..sexyy...

Backup - Reverse Hook, ex: in a Normal Hook, a right handed bowler would have the ball curve down the lane towards the right. But a Backup player would curve the ball towards the left.

Typically the ball is held at the starting position with the fore finger in the 6 o'clock direction and then it at release, it is in the 9 o'clock direction

This is achieved by releasing the ball in a clockwise rotation.

IMO this is the most dangerous style of bowling as the wrist rotates in an unnatural position :s22:
