AnandTech | Intel Broadwell Architecture Preview: A Glimpse into Core M

Looks....err......unexciting.......:(

Again focus is on reducing power consumption. There is a paltry 5% improvement in IPC over Haswell.......

If 14nm process allow CPU to finally hit 5GHz, I don't mind provided no new boards are needed. Else I really don't see why should anyone ditch their Z97 for this.

The only bright side is that with lower power consumption, we can have an 8 core Broadwell without crazy cooling. Who knows, we can even have 12 core Broadwell.

I thought everyone knew that Skylake is the architecture to look forward to...

I doubt we'll really see anything exciting with Skylake either. Intel seems to be following in the footsteps of their competition and going mobile first, then scaling up for their desktop versions.
Laptops and other mobile devices will benefit the most in the next couple of generations.

seems like my sandy bridge i5 2500k oc to 4.6ghz will remain strong all the way to 2020 going by how lazy Intel is.

Which is good!!!!

looking for next upgrade? Intel lazy?
don't need to wait long. Intel will be busy launching Haswell-E processors next month.

But Haswell-E do not really benefit gamers since there are no games that benefit from the extra cores.

The difference is minimal and you'd be served better by getting a better graphics card

Oh ok, I was wrong, looks like Crysis 3 do benefit from extra cores. But looking at the results, its not really a big difference compared to quad core CPUs. As you have said, a better graphics card will easily overcome the difference.

Everyone who is complaining about the 5% IPC increase forgot a simple fact:

Broadwell is a frigging die shrink!

Conroe to Penryn. Nehalem to Westmere. Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge. Each and every one of them had 5% improvement from the die shrink. Ivy Bridge benefited in terms of a better Turbo Boost, and that's it.

Go revise on the Intel Tick-Tock improvement model.

Intel does a little more than just a die shrink though. They did beef up the TLB and some other minor improvements.

But IMHO, even if its Skylake, looking at current trends, I don't think there will be massive improvements. I think Skylake will be ~20% faster than Broadwell.

But I do like the power consumption improvements since we could increase core count and perhaps allow future apps/games to take advantage of more cores.

I won't foresee Skylake performing much better clock for clock, but they could be much more energy efficient (much more than Ivy Bridge is to Haswell) clock for clock rather. Perhaps something we are seeing from Nvidia Kepler to Maxwell?

Regardless a 5% IPC improvement is shitty at best. How that can warrant an upgrade i cant understand.
