Have not been using my ROG laptop (Windows 10) for months as everytime when the machine starts up, it will then start doing all the software update nonsense.

And by the time it finished, the machine also felt quite laggy until me no mood to use liao.

So finally decided to remove Windows from the laptop and install Zorin OS.

Wah not bad...it's so much smoother and easy to use. Tried Steam also no issue.

Microsoft can go eat sh*t!!

Using Linux is not a bed of roses. Do your research, go in with your eyes open.

https://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/threads/linux-is-not-as-good-as-people-say-it-is.7187760/

Background is that Aunty me installed Linux Zorin OS on my old 2014 MacBook Pro (Intel core i5)
https://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/...your-old-laptop-zorin-os-18-is-great.7173436/

Main consideration was that latest version of MacOS is not supported on this model of MacBook and windows 10 also ran out of security update support.

My review after using Linux for a while, yes, it does allow you to do day to day tasks. However, I found that Linux apps are clunky and tends to have bugs and conflicts with each other. From one version of update to the next, weird bugs and conflicts will appear.

Sometimes it is easy to fix, for example, for notification bar battery indicator not giving correct battery level reading or the battery indicator just disappeared from view, a reboot will solve the problem.

But the biggest bug bear is what the beginner Linux user in the following video said; Linux OS "it is kind of slow to react", and she also discovered that Zorin OS has no support for the MacBook's webcam. Similar experience as mine, I find that most modern Linux distros are resource intensive and given similar set of hardware, the Linux OS tends to be slow and laggy for the User Interface experience (click on something, slow to open item menu, slow to open apps, drag things around the animation not smooth).

Unbiased opinion is that Linux distros are not as polished as Windows 10 and MacOS. If your computer is modern enough to support latest version of MacOS and Windows, just stick to those for better user interaction experience, better hardware support too.

Beginner's review of Linux Zorin OS after using for 7 days:
  • Feel is not similar to MacOS, feels more like using Windows
  • GUI and user interaction feels "more old", not as aesthetic (pretty) as MacOS
  • It is adequate for day to day tasks
  • Fresh install of Linux Zorin OS works faster than old MacOS that was bogged down
  • As a new Linux user, have to ask for help often on how to use Linux
  • The Linux email app is "very ugly", it looks like something from the 90s. Ugly but functional.
  • More difficult to exchange MS Word documents with co-workers. Need online work arounds.
  • KDE connect (local send) is not as good as Apple's Airdrop
  • Webcam not supported by Zorin OS. If your job depends on it, then it is frustrating.
  • For Apple iMessage users, no way to send iMessage on Linux.
  • Apple Airpods does not work properly with Zorin OS (yes, I found the same issue too. Had to use other headsets)
  • Screenshot is easier on MacOS, difficult to screenshot on Linux.
  • There are weird glitches in the Linux software, Zorin OS.

If you ask me it really depend on the hardware.
Yes some say any PC can install Linux.
However for the PC to work, there must be a system drivers to support the hardware
inside the PC.

Enterprise level workstation like Dell, HP workstation have their customized Linux image
by the manufacturer.
Consumer wise there are no customized image by the manufacturer.

Windows 10 is still usable, MS and software developers have yet to pull the plug.
I still have a couple of Windows 10 PC still running no issues.

Welcome to the club :)

To be frank, while I was using Win10, I never had much issue, especially with updates, because I use their LTSC version, can go into Group Policy Editor etc and turn off auto updates system-wide. But it is a lot of work every time I want to update to a major version, 'cause need to de-bloat and re-do all the registry and policy settings.

I didn't bother with Win11. Jumped years before then.

Yeah, that's the experience with most live service games too. When you have time to play, then the game is updating or the server is down for maintenance or after the update has downloaded then it is compiling shaders or some other nonsense.

See if Nadella really wants to force the issue. Microsoft can always leak zero days to really trash Windows 10. That will really be playing chicken with their customers.

It works until it doesn't and the command line scripts copied off the internet fails on your laptop with obscure errors trashing your installation. Experienced that many many times when I was fooling around with Linux on VMs. Not recommended for actual work use unless you enjoy tinkering and reinstalling everything frequently.

Really depends on what kind of work you do. Although my work laptop is a Windows 11 machine, most of my work is done in Linux and some of my VMs had been around for years, no frequent reinstalling or whatever not. Usually "reinstall" is only because the version too old and I need to create one with a newer Linux version.
