calmex Abalone

Need some help form the experts here. I have came across Calmex with paper printed labels and without those red chops on the can top. Are they real or fakes? Or 水货？

Unlikely to be authentic unless Calmex changed their packaging. It doesn't make sense to 'downgrade' their packaging to encourage 'fakes'. It is a lose-lose situation both to themselves and their customers.

I have yet to see them in the market so far... I remembered GJH that distributes New Moon brand carries them previously but they seem to have dropped it from their product line. That could explain why they are not seen on the shelves of NTUC, Cold Storage and Giant this year... I will probably be dropping by Victoria Wholesale Market to see if the shops there carry them.

21 in the code after first three alphabets means 2 whole pieces plus 1 cut piece. The third alphabet is either A (Yellow abalones that are usually smaller but from deeper waters >7m) or Z (Blue abalones that are slightly bigger but from depth of 3-7m). A is considered the more premium of the two but really up to individuals' preferences. Prices for Calmex usually higher for A than Z and lesser the no. of pieces better.

I went to Vivo Giant yesterday and planning to buy Calmex Abalone. The young lady over there told me it is 1 whole piece (not even 1+1) with the code mentioned.

I dont believe because of the code 21, luckily i didnt buy it.

Hmm... not surprised by the lack of knowledge for their staff... but perhaps she should be upfront and say 'not sure' instead of 'smoking' her way thru'

Update: Just dropped by NTUC Finest at Bishan and saw both California Mexico Black and Red cans on sale. Both are going for $138. Beside them are the Calmex ones which are on sale at $136.80 (usual $148) until 3 Feb 2016. Given the prices of the two, definitely grab the Calmex and run Drained weight for both is 255g.

I have two calmex abalone cans that are written CAZ01. Is the one whole piece of abalone supposed to be 10 or 01?

Z01 means less than 1 piece of blue abalone (cos these are huge ones). 10 means only 1 whole piece which is treasured by many in terms of presentation...

Mexico Abalone

Dropped by Victoria Wholesale Market yesterday and it seems that California Mexico abalones are really not brought into Singapore for whatever reasons especially for the Gold cans. Those red and black ones in the market could be ex-stock (expiry 2018 or older). So looks like little competition for Calmex now

For Calmex (expiry 2019), the 1+1 pieces ones are going for $140, 2+1 pieces $125 and it gets cheaper as the number of pieces increases right down to about $110 for 4+1 pieces. So it's back to Calmex for this year... a no brainer

Z01 is definitely better than Z11 cos it is much bigger meaning 'older' abalones that are supposed to have stronger, 'deeper' flavor.

For California Mexico, Z01 and Z11 is what differentiates the gold and black cans i.e. Z01 = Gold and Z11 = Black. Gold cans are more expensive
