My friend posted to me Alexandra Technopark Tower B has roadshow. California Mexico Black selling at $108.

Anyone can give me a feedback how these Mexico abalone taste like? hard and chewy? soft and juicy?

Thnaks

California Mexico (Black) was launched in Singapore in 2011 (same distributor as New Moon). It contains the best 'Yellow Abalones' caught in Mexico which are found deeper in the sea compared to the 'Blue Abalone' found in the California Mexico (Red) and most/all Calmex cans (not sure if there are Calmex with yellow abalones cos the ones I bought these two years contained the blue abalones). Yellow abalones are usually smaller in size compared to the blue ones. In 2011, both Black and Red cans were sold at the same price (around $88) with drained weight of 255g. Last year, they were sold at $108 but the drained weight dropped to 218g. This year, they are sold at NTUC for $118 with drained weight of 218g for the Black can and 255g for the Red can. So, do check the expiry date and drained weight before you buy :)

If I recall correctly, the texture for yellow abalones (Black can) should be relatively more tender (but not soft). I think the blue abalones should be more firm and favourful. Taste & quality wise, they are on par or at least very close to Calmex. Since last year, California Mexico also introduced a Gold can in Singapore. They contain the larger blue abalone compared to the Red can. Typically, it has less than one abalone with drained weight of 218g i.e. the whole abalone weighs more than 218g. In the Red cans, you can have 1 + 1 (one whole plus one part) or 2 + 1 (two whole plus one part) pieces of blue abalone while for the Black cans, you typically get 2 + 1 pieces of yellow abalones.

Hope the above info is useful.

Interestingly, I saw an ad for Festive Sale (22 - 25 Jan 2013 10am - 6pm) also at Alexander Technopark (Tower B #06-10 Lift Lobby 3) by Goh Joo Hin (Distributor of New Moon & California Mexico Abalones) where both California Mexico Black & Red label are being sold for $110 each (usual $118). So one more day tomorrow for those who are interested.

For those who swear by Calmex and will buy just 車輪牌, NTUC is selling them at $149.80 per can (1+1 pcs of blue abalone i.e. one whole plus one part to make up drained weight of 255g). Saw it today morning at the Toa Payoh Central (above MRT) branch. So grab yours now if the price is right :):)
