i spent 8 days, 5 in SR 2 in PP. and no Cambodia is not hostile, though it is not as developed as Bangkok. I went to Beng Mealea, Preah Vihear too. But given that this is ur first time there, u may skip these 2 places as they are quite far out. U can google them and plan for the next trip :)

In SR, u can visit the fishing village too, be sure to catch the boat ride too!
If u r adventurous enough and within your budget, you can head up to Phnom Kulen waterfall, the locals like to go there for picnic. very nice place. u can ask ur tour guide about it. google them for more images :)

Bus from SR to PP is about USD 6-7, capitol tours / sorya 168 / GST.

Meal at roadside stall or open air hawker centre USD 1, restaurant USD 2-4...5.

Hotel around USD 5-8, no aircon, but got private toilet and cable tv. USD 25 can stay quite good liao.

I would book the Phnom Penh accommodation first, as hotels in Siem Reap are localised in a compact town, making walk-in easier.
