Powerful enough, but get cars rated at 2.0 or better, as handling will be better.
Agree.

Depends on familiarity also but I prefer stick to a vehicle I familiar with (vios, altis and so) rather than a 4 WD SUV especially on narrow road and lanes. Even in city itself got many tight lane widths. For me la.

Thanks Fre.

Another question on driving in Chiangmai, I was browsing the rental cars companies and saw popular Vios & City available for rental. Are these two cars powerful enough to drive to Mae Hong Son & Pai and back to Chiangmai esp. given the mountainous roads.
Get a Honda City 1.0 Turbo (that’s what I’m driving). You’ll be amazed with the power.

Thanks. May I know which car rental co. in Chiangmai did you rent from when in Chiangmai.
1. Any scams when returning the rental car? e.g. check under the car for the smallest scratches and deduct your deposit, etc...
2. How was the car condition? new car (less then 3yrs) or much older cars?

Just get from those international chains. Personally always get from Hertz at airport.

There's also a reputable local one North wheels.

I moved here and bought the car. The City 1.0L Turbo is a new model (I think since 2020) that replaced the older 1.5L so it’s definitely newer.
If you change your mind about self drive and want to hire a private driver can look for me

Hi,

In Chiangmai, other than cash for payment of food and services, are there any widely used electronic payment app or cards? e.g. payment for supermarkets, restuarants, national park entry fees, themeparks, etc...

Is youtrip or trust card often accepted?

Still mainly using cash for payment.
E-payment is using Thai bank app so high chance we cannot use.
Credit card, youtrip or trust card more for restaurants and cafe.
National park entry fees still use cash.
No themepark in Chiangmai.

Anyone try to ride bike up? How long is the journey from Chiang Mai city to the view point? I am planning to either see sun rise or sun set.
About 2hrs.
Northern Thailand got many sunrise or sunset viewpoint, check which one you like. There are many glamping site too.
Many mountain roads are steep, driving a car may be better, from my point of view.
