I’ll tell you 2 TRUE situations

Once I went to israel in 2004. So I bought the annual travel insurance cos it was the only one that covered israel AND death or injury due to terrorism

After I returned, I talked to my agent and she told me actually a lot of things I did wasn’t covered. For example, I was covered under terrorism but I was travelling around to riot areas to just see what was happening and if I got killed in a cross fire, that wasn’t terrorism so I was not covered. I would only be covered if I got killed or injured by a suicide bomber but not during riots or crossfire

Second. I had a fall and hurt my back in London and came back to Singapore and saw the doctor and was hospitalised. Now comes the problem. I have some abdominal issue, nothing serious but it appears as weird on x rays. So i went to see the doctor regarding my back pain and he did an x ray and admitted me to colorectal

See the problem? I had an injury in london and now got admitted for abdominal issues. Of cos the colorectal doctor investigated and said should be orthopaedic doctors. But this was Chinese new year period and I was very bored in hospital so got discharged with outpatient ortho follow up

Travel insurance claim failed cos the discharge summary showed I was admitted for an old condition (abdominal issue) and not injury from a fall

Could I have claimed based on follow up? I dunno cos I claimed under my hospital’s medical benefit so I didn’t need to pay a cent after deducting from benefits and Medisave so I never pressed the issue

Make sure that there's a 'cancel for any reason' clause/add-on for more expensive trips.

There were two times I successfully claimed

Same trip as the israel one. I got my money stolen during a stopover at amsterdam. Made a police report. It was written in Dutch

Came back to Singapore and submitted the report and the insurance company asked if got english translation and I said don’t have. Eventually they just paid my claims

Another time is I missed a flight from USA cos the bus did not come - a lot of people nagged me after this cos it was so obvious the bus would be late so why didn’t I take a cab? The difference between bus fare and taxi fare was less than $10 - this was in buffalo New York.

Tried to claim but insurance company said need an email from public transport company admitting the bus didn’t come. The bus company actually insisted they came until I wrote on their email “I love USA I love New York it’s so beautiful BUT there was this bus…”

Eventually they admitted the bus had engine trouble and skipped my bus stop and I used their email to claim $100 which more than covered an extra day of hostel stay and food (cos I was travelling on frequent flier points I managed to get another air ticket for free). When I tell my friends this they say wa lau all this drama for $100 when you could have just paid $10 for taxi…

Depending on destination, might end up having to book SQ which may cost a lot more. Even if can find other budget carrier, timing and dates may not be the same.

Ya it's unfortunate.. you don't see airlines closing down often.. so paying a bit more for the next best flight seem reasonable..
