I am also looking at getting a COE car as I basically just need it for the weekends and doesn’t seem to make sense to buy a new one for the limited mileage I’m gng to use it for.

Deciding between a Toyota rush or a RAV4 (5 year COE, below 40k). What are the chances of these 2 cars lasting 5 years without any major repairs? Parts for these models easily available?

OPC COE car which might be good for you based on your weekend usage only.

Though TYT rides are famous for reliability, but need to be face it that is a COE ride. Nobody can predict there won't be any repairs (minor/ major). Touch- wood if kena major ones and don't worth the repair, scrap it and take back the remaining $$ then proceed to look for next ride.

TYT parts are commonly available both SG else head north for some cost saving.
Alternatively, try source online. Wont be that difficult. :)

Rush is underpowered, wear n tear will be more. But parts are cheap

RAV4 I remember there was a period whereby sales were quite bad and not much on the road.

Agreed that using grab/ taxi would be cheaper in this case.

Grab/taxi good for Point A to Point B... single drop off.

For multiple stops, own ride still better choice over grab/ taxi.

End of the day is : $$ VS Convenience:)

It’s time to resurrect my thread on why it does not cost less to take taxi everywhere.

It’s more for a family car + standby purposes where I need to ferry the elderly to the doctors. I still take public transport for my daily work but there were times where even if willing to pay surge also cannot get a ride. :(

RAV4 also will have to pay higher road tax so I’m leaning more towards rush tbh.

Underpowered compared to other 1.5 engine or against RAV4? My previous ride was a 1.3M Jazz so I don’t think will be worse than that? :s13:

@ OP

that Fit cannot buy la, 4 owners, likely used as a rental / grab for a couple of months at least.

not say high mileage cannot buy, rental / PHV cars are abused and serviced with the lowest standards possible.

I had the daihatsu terios (aka rush twin).

it was a good enough ride but had to let go in the end at the 9th year as it was throwing up CEL randomly despite a few trips to workshop.

You are smart. Make sure you get a workshop to thoroughly check the car before buying. Alot of dealers are dishonest.

can give some examples on how they are dishonest? because the dealers I saw on facebook they always post pictures with the happy customers and i also don't see any negative reviews.

Test drive before buying. And make sure you test it in the early morning or before they start the car for the day. Touch the bonnet and if it’s cool, you are ready to test the car.

Some dealers cheat on mileage. Look at the condition of the car vis-a-vis the mileage recorded. Does the wear and tear look consistent with the mileage recorded?

More importantly how does the engine sound and how the transmission shifts after first start? Also, observe the exhaust after firing up the car to see if there’s excessive white or black smoke. If there’s a little too much smoke (especially after initial evaporation of water, which is normal) then realise that there might be engine issues like a worn piston ring or head gasket leak. You walk.

Go slow when you test drive for the first 5 mins. Transmission shifts smoothly? Then go abit faster. Check if the car drives straight on a flat and straight road by briefly releasing the steering wheel. Check for any abnormal vibrations at >80km/hr (could be misalignment of tires or more). Test drive it for at least 20mins. If they don’t allow, walk, because they probably have something to hide.

Use a used car checklist to go through items, although I usually only check the major items. Look at engine oil and transmission fluid using the dipstick. Is it blackish or dirty looking? If the transmission fluid has a burnt smell, move on to the next car.

Finally, if you can, get the car scanned using a diagnostic tool that your mechanic would have. Assuming the dealer is comfortable driving down the car to your workshop for inspection. If not, move on.

Quite a few steps to take note but these tips have helped me purchase a number of used (even high mileage) cars without much after sales trouble.

Last thing, avoid dealers with bad reputation. I prefer to buy from those that concurrently sell new cars because you know they aren’t deliberately taking in crap cars at low prices to sell it high.

Some of those I mentioned make the profit selling new cars and are only selling used cars that their customers traded in. Ask these dealers about the history of the car. They might know one thing or two. My last car had 200,000km when I bought it. I asked about the history and realised the owner was a piano teacher and that explains the high mileage.

Personally, I’d rather buy a high mileage car then one with fake mileage. But end of the day ehat matters alot more is more it was taken care of.

Have fun car hunting.

Look at roads in sg/my. Especially in MY, this brand is a rare gem....
Parts maybe available but expensive and have to wait long to get it.
So you can figure it out parts readily available or not for yourself dude:D
