Depends on whether they can ( or already) identified which pilot asked the question. Current guess is pilot flying asked the question and it’s unlikely he can flip those switches given he needs to control the stick for take off and hard to flip them without the pilot monitoring noticing.

The flying one is the co-pilot so he asked the main pilot?

ICPA, which is the union of erstwhile Indian Airlines, said in a statement issued Sunday: "We are deeply disturbed by speculative narratives, particularly the reckless and unfounded insinuation of pilot suicide. Let us be unequivocally clear: there is absolutely no basis for such a claim at this stage, and invoking such a serious allegation based on incomplete or preliminary information is not only irresponsible-it is deeply insensitive to the individuals and families involved."

Expressing their "unwavering support for the flight crew of Air India flight Al 171," the statement added: "Pilots undergo extensive psychological and professional screening, recurrent training, and operate under the highest standards of safety, responsibility, and mental fitness. To casually suggest pilot suicide in the absence of verified evidence is a gross violation of ethical reporting and a disservice to the dignity of the profession."

Sharing this article here. Not a surprise. As the prelim report really makes their whole group look very bad. 🤔

finally - a 10-year experienced DreamLiner pilot reveals ITS FREAKING IMPOSSIBLE TO "CUTOFF" BOTH SWITCHES IN THE TIME OF 1-SECOND

so - pilot suicide/error RULED OUT

i will not be surprised if BOEING tries to sweep this under their smelly rotten carpet again

- best theory - WEAR AND TEAR leading to FAILURE

also, "The only surviving passenger mentioned that the lights were flickering during take off! Perhaps there was a power outage."

Deliberate, pre-mediated action can be executed in 1 sec as the switches are side by side. This occurs at 3 secs after liftoff. The pilot who do it has time to put his hand/finger in position to off the 1st switch and thereafter quickly move to the next switch and repeat...

Can always do it at the simulator and time it to see 1 sec is enough.

Also we don't know the resolution of the timing.. is it 1 sec exact or it could be say 1.2 or1.9 sec cos it happens before the 2 sec mark where the position of the switch is sampled. Sampling frequency plays a part too.

Doomed Air India pilot’s medical records probed amid reports of depression, other mental health struggles

Medical records for an Air India pilot killed in last month’s crash were reportedly turned over to investigators amid reports he’d been suffering from depression and other mental health issues.

Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, 56, was the lead pilot when the London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner went down in Ahmedabad on June 12, killing 241 people on board and leaving just one survivor.

Sabharwal, who had more than 15,000 flying hours under his belt at the time of the tragedy, had taken medical leave in recent years due to apparent mental health woes, the Telegraph reported.

“I have heard from several Air India pilots who told me he had some depression and mental health issues,” said Mohan Ranganathan, a leading Indian aviation safety expert.

“He had taken time off from flying in the last three to four years. He had taken medical leave for that.”

The report comes as Air India’s CEO pushed back on initial crash investigation findings that pilot error involving fuel cut-off switches may have caused the crash.

Sabharwal had also taken bereavement leave following the 2022 death of his mom and had recently been weighing retirement to care for his aging father, according to the Telegraph.

The pilot, who underwent a medical exam in September last year, would have been given clearance to return to work, Ranganathan said.

“He must have been medically cleared by the company [Air India] doctors. They must have given the clearance certificate,” he said.

It comes after a preliminary report into the tragedy found that the jet’s engine fuel cutoff switch had been flipped just three seconds after taking off.

It is still unclear how or why the switch was flipped

The report, which was spearheaded by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, didn’t offer any findings that signaled whether any emergency before the crash would require a fuel cutoff.

Both black boxes for the doomed flight, which include the cockpit voice recorders and flight data, were recovered from the rubble a few days after the crash.

Air India declined to comment on reports about Sabharwal’s mental health.

But a spokesperson for the airline’s parent company, Tata Group, confirmed the pilot’s records were turned over.

“He did take bereavement leave in 2022 following his mother’s death, and his medical records were submitted as part of the investigation, and the preliminary report did not find anything noteworthy,” the rep said.

Meanwhile, the airline’s CEO, Campbell Wilson, issued an internal memo insisting the probe into the crash was “far from over” as investigators zero in on why the plane’s engine fuel cutoff switch was flipped just seconds after take off.

Over the past 30 days, we’ve seen an ongoing cycle of theories, allegations, rumors and sensational headlines, many of which have later been disproven,” read the memo, which was acquired by the Wall Street Journal.

The Indian Commercial Pilots’ Association had previously said the crew on board the ill-fated plane had acted in line with their training ahead of the crash.

Actually you just need 1 second to flick both switches. And these switches can't activate by themselves. Especially both. And who says pilots not alive they cannot defend themselves. The whole point is to look at the evidence and deduce from that.

So it's definitely murder-suicide from senior pilot who was not flying the plane.

Investigation team has brought in police and psychologist who are both not pilots. So obviously something else needs to be looked at.

That guy above is a spokesperson so obviously need to defend his organization's interests.

To say that the pilots are dead and thus you cannot slander them shows that something fishy is going on.

When proven,
it's called murder-suicide cos planeload of crew/pax perished too.

Criminal investigation proceeds in parallel with the AAIB incident investigation.

See this video.
Hand on the right fuel switch.
Move the switch and immediately change to left switch and moved it. 1 sec is enough.

New Details in Air India Crash Probe Shift Focus to Senior Pilot

INDIA: A cockpit recording of dialogue between the two pilots of the Air India flight that crashed last month indicates the captain turned off the switches controlling fuel flow to the plane's engines, The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday.

The newspaper cited people familiar with US officials' early assessment of evidence uncovered in the investigation into the crash, which killed 260 people.

The first officer, who was flying the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, asked the more experienced captain why he moved the switches to the "cutoff" position after the aircraft lifted off the runway, the report said.

The first officer expressed surprise and then panicked, while the captain appeared to remain calm, WSJ reported.

India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Boeing and Air India did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment on the report.

The two pilots involved were Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and First Officer Clive Kunder, who had total flying experience of 15,638 hours and 3,403 hours, respectively.

A preliminary report released last week by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau depicted confusion in the cockpit shortly before the June 12 crash, and raised fresh questions over the position of the critical engine fuel cutoff switches
