GE2025: Piano teacher introduced as Red Dot United’s lead in Jurong Central SMC

SINGAPORE – Red Dot United (RDU) on March 23 introduced a possible opposition candidate for the new Jurong Central SMC.

Piano teacher Emily Woo, 59, introduced herself to residents during a walkabout at Yuhua Market and Hawker Centre as RDU’s team lead for the area.

Madam Woo will front the groundwork in the Jurong Central single seat, said RDU secretary-general Ravi Philemon. But he added that it is too early to confirm any candidates for the upcoming general election.

“A lot of things can change from now till Nomination Day,” he told reporters during the walkabout.

Madam Woo, who joined RDU in 2020, said she is a resident in the new SMC.

A former teacher with the Ministry of Education, Madam Woo has been an independent piano teacher since 2000. She holds a bachelor’s degree in music from the Catholic Institute University in Paris.

Former National Solidarity Party member Mohamed Fazli Talip, who joined RDU in 2020, was also seen speaking to residents.

Madam Woo said she has been volunteering in the community, and said residents are concerned about issues like the cost of living.

“We will listen to them and do our best to speak on their behalf. RDU’s policies will be in that direction,” she added.

No other opposition party has laid claim to Jurong Central SMC so far, and Mr Philemon believes a three-cornered fight is unlikely.

Opposition parties are very mindful that multi-cornered fights will give the incumbents an advantage and will do their best to avoid them, he said.

Mr Philemon said RDU had hoped Jurong GRC would remain intact for the general election, but took some consolation that it has worked the ground in Jurong Central as well.

“We’ll send our best candidate to contest in this constituency,” he added.

RDU obtained 25.39 per cent of the vote in Jurong GRC in the 2020 General Election.

East coast would have fallen this time even if they put HSK, ET, TSL together in the GRC. But two persons decided that they cannot keep their bird and abalone from each other's reach.... Really is sad.

If this election the opp lost Hg, Aljunied or SK.
Next election redraw again then very likely all become 3 corner fight already..

Back to ground zero which is very likely to happen.
Just look at Potong Pasir

Hougang smc demographics changed a lot, hard to say.
Aljunied should be safe.
Sengkang WP should be able to win.. but below 55% kind.

Is it me or Red Dot United seems a lot more organised and credible than all the other jiapalang parties like SPP, NSP and some others I don't even remember the name.

Seems like they are coming up faster than expected

GE2025: Talks held to integrate plans for Joo Chiat, East Coast, says Edwin Tong

A lot of synergy between work done under the East Coast Plan and what his team has been doing in Joo Chiat: minister

https://www.businesstimes.com.sg/si...te-plans-joo-chiat-east-coast-says-edwin-tong

[SINGAPORE] With his Joo Chiat ward being drawn into East Coast GRC, Edwin Tong has been in talks with the constituency’s MPs on how to integrate existing plans.

The minister for culture, community and youth said there is a lot of synergy between work done under the East Coast Plan and what his team has been doing in Joo Chiat.

The emphasis will be on minimising disruption to residents, while ensuring that programmes that have been promised or have started will continue, he added.

Addressing the media on Sunday (Mar 23), during a three-hour-long walkabout at the food centre at Block 16 Bedok South Road, Tong said: “For one, the food on both sides of the border is equally good, so we are looking to use that to enhance the offerings for residents.”

It was Tong’s first public walkabout in East Coast GRC. He was accompanied by the constituency’s anchor minister, Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat, whose ward is Bedok. The group representation constituency’s four other MPs were not present.

Tong’s Joo Chiat ward was carved out of Marine Parade GRC in the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee’s report released on Mar 11. His ward, along with some HDB blocks in Chai Chee, were drawn into East Coast GRC.

Asked about whether their appearance together means both men would run in the constituency, DPM Heng pointed to the fact that Joo Chiat is now a part of East Coast GRC.

“So I look forward to having Edwin here as part of East Coast,” he said.

He added that he felt that the residents “have been very warm towards having Edwin join our team”.

Asked about the challenges of integration, Tong said of his relationship with DPM Heng: “Just because we’re in different GRCs, doesn’t mean we don’t know each other well.

“We came into politics in the same year, we do know each other personally.”

DPM Heng added that while Tong had visited his ward for the walkabout on Mar 23, there are plans for the existing East Coast GRC team to also visit his Joo Chiat ward.

As MP for a division newly added to the well-established East Coast GRC, it is important to Tong to win residents’ confidence and trust, he said.

He also wants to understand their needs in a way that allows him to serve them better, added Tong.

When asked if he will visit other parts of East Coast, Tong said: “I would like to, because I see that Joo Chiat will be, in future, part of the GRC… If I do want to serve in Joo Chiat, it means I’ll be in East Coast, so I therefore have to know about the other divisions as well.”

Tong said he has started meeting volunteers in other East Coast divisions, as well as those in Chai Chee.

DPM Heng has also shared his insights into the GRC, he added.

When asked about potential changes to the GRC’s line-up, DPM Heng said the full slate of candidates would be revealed by the PAP’s secretary-general, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.

“There is a schedule that he has. Please be patient,” he said.

He added: “I’ve given him my inputs and we will wait for Nomination Day or earlier.” THE STRAITS TIMES

Hard when Dr.Chee keep contesting different areas... Should have try a GRC instead...seems like he is hopping around trying his luck...
GRC Lagi more no chance. Impossible SDP can find 5 top candidates to get the swing voters.

The problem with the party is that they have not grew as a party out of Paul Tamyah and CSJ.

1. What is the East Coast Plan?

During the 2020 General Elections, the PAP introduced the East Coast Plan as part of their campaign for East Coast GRC. The plan was supposed to be a comprehensive blueprint for the area, covering things like housing, transport, and jobs. But hor, when people asked for details, the PAP team (led by then-DPM Heng Swee Keat) couldn’t provide much specifics.

This led to netizens anyhow suan and say:

  • “East Coast Plan is like invisible chicken in cai png – you know it’s there, but you cannot see it.”
  • “East Coast Plan is like cloud storage – you know it exists, but you don’t know where it is.”
Basically, the plan became a joke because it was sibeh vague and lacked concrete details.

2. Why PAP Sent Heng Swee Keat to East Coast GRC Last Minute

Wah, this one ah, like cai png auntie suddenly change the price – sibeh last-minute and got people kancheong spider.

  • Original Plan: Heng Swee Keat was supposed to contest in Tampines GRC, where he had been an MP since 2011. But just before Nomination Day, PAP announced that he would move to East Coast GRCinstead.
  • Reason: The PAP was sibeh worried about losing East Coast GRC to the Workers’ Party (WP). In the 2015 GE, PAP won East Coast GRC with only 60.7% of the vote, and WP was gaining ground. So, they decided to send their heavyweight (Heng Swee Keat) to steady the ship.
  • Outcome: PAP managed to win East Coast GRC in 2020, but their vote share dropped to 53.4%, which was sibeh close. Heng Swee Keat’s last-minute move was seen as a desperate attempt to save the GRC, and it became a talking point for netizens.

3. Why the Joke Became So Popular

The East Coast Plan joke kena viral because:

  • Relatability: Everyone has experienced something vague or last-minute, like cai png auntie saying “no more fish” but then suddenly find one more piece.
  • Political Satire: Netizens love to suan politicians, especially when they chut pattern like this. The joke became a way to poke fun at the PAP’s wayang.
  • Memes and Creativity: Singaporeans are sibeh creativewhen it comes to memes. The East Coast Plan became a blank canvas for all kinds of jokes, from fake brochures to parody videos.

4. Impact on PAP and Heng Swee Keat

  • Heng Swee Keat’s Image: The last-minute move and the East Coast Plan joke slightly tarnished his image as a steady and reliable leader. Some people saw it as a sign that PAP was panicking.
  • PAP’s Strategy: The move showed that PAP was willing to take big risks to protect their stronghold. But it also highlighted their vulnerability in certain GRCs.
  • Opposition Momentum: The joke gave the opposition (especially WP) more ammunition to suan the PAP and rally support.

5. Conclusion

So ah, the East Coast Plan joke is a classic example of how Singaporeans use humor to comment on politics. It started because the plan was sibeh vague, and the last-minute move of Heng Swee Keat to East Coast GRC added fuel to the fire.

But hor, jokes aside, the episode also showed that even the PAP can feel the heat from the opposition. Whether the East Coast Plan will ever become a real thing or remain a memeis up to the PAP to prove. For now, it’s just another chapter in the wayang of Singapore politics.

Remember ah, in politics, no matter how steady you think you are, always expect the unexpected – and maybe prepare a real plan next time! 😂🇸🇬

i believe the results somewhat contributed to his exit from the PM race too

EastCoast simi plan? WestCoast simi plan? WestCoast panic join Jurong. New Grc so big until, why dun Sgp divide East-West; eg North-South Korea, East-West Germany. Democratic Death.

My feeling is WP needs to take over East Coast GRC this time, or else they can forget it when all the new BTOs are completed there.

My 2-cent opinion:
Suggest Sylvia Lim or Gerald Giam cross over from Aljunied GRC to anchor East Coast GRC and add in Star Candidate Harpreet Singh into the fold. East Coast GRC has every chance to be under WP.

Aljunied GRC is still safe due to sympathy votes for Pritam despite his court conviction.

If all the WP seats can be retained this time plus 1 new GRC is won, it will be considered a GREAT victory for WP.

Worst case is WP seats all gone, which is a low possibility in my view.
WP won't move their MPs out of Aljunied. They serve them so long already, residents love them and their work. Too risky to shift them out. Later Aljunied also don't have.

Their strategy is to groom newbies, if they are up to standards like Jamus they will win the GRC.

So far I don't see WP winning another GRC. Would be quite heng to keep Sengkang too. They have no star power and Nicole Seah leaving really is a huge blow to them. Otherwise East Coast sure win this time.
