Copying LARGE data over KILLED my HDDs

Case 1
Bought new Seagate 4TB External HDD so copy all data from a 15-year old perfect working Samsung SpinPoint F1 750GB SATA-II HDD KILLED the Samsung HDD (completely dead with tok tok tok sounds). About 600GB of data transferred.

Case 2
Bought a new WD Blue 1TB HDD to replace the abovementioned DEAD Samsung HDD.
Have the same data on my WD VelociRaptor(DHTZ) 1TB 10kRPM SATA HDD and transferred almost 260GB of data over to the new WD Blue 1TB.
Now the old WD VelociRaptor(DHTZ) 1TB is showing errors when scanning and CrystalDiskInfo shows "CAUTION" Health Status for the VelociRaptor(DHTZ) 1TB omg

Anyone have experiences copying large data all at once killed their source HDDs?

I never experience such incident before but it's common sense not to copy huge amount of data or
overuse any old HDD which actually can fail anytime. Even new HDD need to set spin down time to cool it down.

You should slowly copy data from old HDD to new one. Allowing the drive to cool down. After all, old HDD is reaching the end of its service life.

no issue here. I have been copying data in batches of ~200GB when upgrading my HDD capacity (up to 6TB). Few years ago, I switched using Enterprise HDD "more lasting". As it's Helium-sealed design, I can easily copy my data ~500GB in batches. BTW I'm using Hotswap Bays.

its not that copying killed it. the old hdd developed bad sectors over time, so have clicking sound. a full read can detect bad sectors, thats what scandisk does.

The HDD was probably already faulty waiting to be discovered. the average lifespan of older HDDs are just 3 years, and that has gotten worse overtime (2.5 years).

What were you expecting with a 15-year-old HDD? :(

I know aged people mindset love their HDDs, but I am based and cannot care less about them.

HDDs, in their current state, aren't reliable, at least for my expectations. It's not like I am just basing on those studies above. I was also once an ex-seagate employee and had my share of first-hand experience.

If your data was important, then just throwing files into a HDD is literally the biggest gamble regarding a long-term storage solution, and you lost.

Portable HDDs enemies are heat due to the sealed design and vibrations.
If copying huge data, best to have some cooling.
Also, allow proper spin down before moving it, usually I give it a couple of seconds.

Same for 3.5" HDD. If for backup, just use as backup. Not daily usage and backup.

If you are waiting for the HDD to tell you it is faulty (Eg. SMART), you will always know it only when it fails/start failing.

Only when you (eventually) come to the realization that you need a "doctor" or a "supervisor" to tell you that your "worker (HDD)" is sick. Then you know what data protection and real backup really are.

Why are enterprise data-centres still using magnetic drives that are failing (or high failure rates) and yet your data are still secured? Is it just because of 3-2-1 backup or using your conventional RAID 5/6? They keep spending time accessing/mounting their backups and re-silvering? Think again.​

To me I don't think is because of what you transfer but rather the lifespan of the drives.
Samsung SpinPoint F1 750GB SATA-II and WD VelociRaptor(DHTZ) 1TB 10kRPM are
really old drives.

yeah... when the 2 old drives are just backup for reading and accessing, CrystalDiskInfo shows "Health" as green OK. Only when transferring huge data, the old drives starts to fail.

IMHO.
I think maybe plan to every 2-3 years change drive. Should be safer.

The SMART to me is subjective because I have one drive which passes SMART but got clicking sound. :ROFLMAO:

For Case 2, I've downloaded WD software "Dashboard" to check on my WD VelociRaptor(DHTZ) 1TB, showing "Status" as "Normal" but then using Dashboard Tools to run Short S.M.A.R.T. Diagnostic Test, it failed.
Showing: "Failed with error code 7"

I suspect its more a quality of drive issue, are these drives housed in a portable housing? I move TB's of data between NAS systems with no issues.
