Motherboard must support Hot swap feature so this is not a software level feature but hardware.
Usually used in Data center/servers if drive fail can just pulled out and replace.
Cuz you cannot shutdown the server if not the entire infra will go down.

Home use rarely seen expect in NAS that support Hot swap.
I built a few PCs over the years and the motherboards do support hot swap feature. I not sure of other motherboards out there but is it so rare to see hot swap feature on motherboards nowadays?

If there are important files, always do a backup. Nowadays, mechanical drives are cheap because they are cheaply made with serious repercussions to quality. I used to find major quality issues with Seagate, but I think the same can be said for any other brands now. Only way for them to sell is to go cheaper and higher capacity.

Check what? Health of drive is Crystaldiskinfo.
Chkdsk is to check the file structure, any file corruption or missing files.
Chkdsk won't be able to tell if the drive is faulty.

But when Chkdsk will appear that drive is starting to fail or corrupt.
