CPU+Mobo recommendations

Hey, i upgraded from i5 6500 + gtx1070 to R5 3600 + gtx1070. 1440p for both. Utilisation: cpu near 100%, gpu about 80% in old setup. Now cpu 20%, gpu 100%.

But need to manage your expectation. 1440p 144hz max setting SotTB prob need 2080ti

Edit: checked the SotTB benchmark for 1070 to 2080ti. 2080ti only hit 107fps avg

I5 6500 that bad ? I use 4690 + gtx970 can 1440p but only mid setting, wasn't that pleasure

Upgrading to newer CPU with more cores and threads will improve performance in a lot of games.

Newer games are making use of more cores and threads, and older CPU with just 4 cores can really be a bottleneck. I played games like battlefield and tomb raider and I get much better smooth gameplay using same graphic card with my current ryzen 3600(6 cores 12 threads) compared to my i5 4690 4 core processor.

If interested can look at a recent video by tech deals about hyper threading or SMT with games. (smoother gameplay, higher min fps with more threads)

that's what I thought, but it seems the game can't run properly if I have a web browser open at the same time. Objects only start loading faster when the browser is closed. It can't be that a web browser uses up that much of the GPU?

Anyway, if $1k can also fit in an RTX GPU then I'll go for the RTX 1st and see if I do need a CPU upgrade. I havent been following prices in a long time

If you are gaming and multitasking at the same time, e.g web browsing or streaming, then an i5 is not enough due to having only 4 cores.

You should consider upgrading to at least a Ryzen 5 3600.

No it's not choppy. It's just that the game can be slow when it comes to loading screens or when loading distant background objects. Performance monitor shows CPU usage at 100%. It's very unlikely my SSD RAM or PSU is related. SSD rates at 100% health on Crystaldisk, PSU is 650w and I've 56GB RAM.

As mentioned earlier as well, I'm up for upgrading to an RTX GPU. I just didn't know I could fit it in a $1k budget for mobo+CPU as well. Obviously I don't need to use the entire budget, but just good enough so I can get a constant 60+ fps on 1440p on Shadow of the tomb radier, without excessively long loading screens. I also want to change my mobo as I'm considering a sound card/wireless card in the future, and I also have an m.2 nvme SSD that I want to use

Another cheapo way to get higher fps is nvidia image sharpening on 1080p outputting to 1440p monitor. You can adjust the sharpening and grain until comfortable.

This is the best answer I've seen so far. If you see my rig, 1440p screen & 9900k paired with GTX1080Ti, I have some choppy scenes in older games like Wildlands and Witcher 3 (I ALWAYS max out the graphics. Or else, there is no real point spending so much on a pc). My honest feedback is, you'd need a minimum of RTX2070 Super to enjoy decent playing experience (RTX off) on latest AAA titles maxed out at 1440p@60fps. We do not even want to think about higher refresh rates and 4k.

Your possible best option with $1000 budget:
Sell away GTX1070 for $220-250 (Average $240)
Sell away mobo cpu ram for $220-260 (Average $240)
You get back ~$480

Buy:
R5 3600 for $280-300
Any cheap B450 board for $120-150
2x8gb 3200mhz rams for $80-90
RTX2080 Super (Used) for $900-950
Total cost ~$1430

Still within your budget of $1000

2080 Ti with 9900KS with full eye candy some scenes goes down to low 90s at 1440p with a 120hz monitor.
So with a 1080 Ti, it is definitely going to be noticeably worse. At least with BF5 in my opinion.

Using a 1080ti, SSD's, 16GB 3200 corsair.

I've been debating in my mind if getting a 9700k is worth it or not or if i should just get a 3600/x. I am very worried that if i just throw a 3600 in i'll still get the same micro-stutters because perhaps its due to my ram compatibility with 1st gen boards, i dunno.

What's the main diff between the 2 boards?

Price, VRM and Bios Space.

"Max" has greater bios space which was required during initial Ryzen release for max compatibility.

VRM Rating list
Price wise and VRM cooling.
Strictly speaking, most boards can handle OC 3600 easily so it really come down to price. Most people would get the "M" version of Asrock if going budget. People who get the ATX version well, I don't know for what purpose because those that would go for multi card rig would be using X570 anyway.
