I visited in early October. Much of the autumn scenery was already replaced by the bare vegetation of the winter to come. Early September will be ideal, when the autumn colours are at their best and yet the temperature has not dipped so much.

I went this year mid Sept. The leave not yet change colour.

I saw my China tour guide post the photo during mid Oct in his wechat. darm nice. Leave change colour

I remembered wrongly. Checked the time-stamp on my pictures. It was late October and not September. We were one of the last groups to enter the area before the roads were closed for the season that year. To correct myself, early Octobe would be better.

Thanks for the reply but early Oct is their National Day and also the most expensive fare to travel. I think I'll go mid to end Oct. Any tour agent to recommend? I only have 2 people going as most friends are not keen due to the altitude.

Golden Week is less of an issue nowadays. Your exposure is fairly limited if you are only flying into Chengdu directly to go on a guided tour. Just plan early.

Many more options if you access Chinese forums and sites. I did not engage a tour agent, but hitched onto a self-help travel group through a Chinese traveller forum. Basically a group was formed with a specific itinerary in mind, and everybody chartered a mini-bus charter for the itinerary.
Now it is entirely possible to do the whole thing without joining a tour group.

Came across this last week. Things are a great deal easier now for visitors to Yading-Daocheng. There are boardwalks and battery-operated transportation.

If possible, go one way by road and the other by flight. I had a chartered bus so we could stop and overnight at the beautiful sites along the way. These are Kangding, Litang, Luding etc. To save time, you can fly from or back to Chengdu or Guangzhou from the fairly-new Daocheng Yading Airport.
