It's amazing that the taxes are only $67. Damn Singapore to Taipei tax is $383!!! I redeemed on Cathay Pacific Instead for $74 tax with just slightly more miles needed.
to be more specific, the taxes typically include fuel surcharge, but in JP's case, the gov regulated the fuel surcharge and for now (since 1 Apr), there is zero fuel surcharge in place for flights to/from Japan due to the low fuel prices. It may be reinstated later on when fuel prices rise.

For other SQ flights e.g. to Taipei, fuel surcharge is not regulated by the authorities so that is why you pay such high taxes (inclusive of the fuel surcharges that SQ levies)

It is legislated in HK that no fuel surcharges can be charged, so even SQ ex-HK would have a much lower surcharge than an itinerary from other parts of the world. CX is a HK based carrier, with lots of flights from there so a lot of their flights are forced to have a lower surcharge component.

CX also has an excellent long-haul business class product but it's difficult to find a plane with it between SG and HK and it's subjected to frequent last minute swaps. SQ has a dodgy regional business class product as well, but their aircraft rotation schedules are miles ahead of CX and you get the type of seat you booked 99.99% of the time.

To be honest, I find that, all things being equal, it's better to redeem my miles for SQ flights rather than Cathay Pacific, if I'm flying to a destination served by both airlines.

Somehow, CX flights require more miles when compared to the 15% discount given for Krisflyer redemptions. And I'm not too impressed with CX business class, when compared with SQ business class.

True SQ has an advantage for lesser miles than CX with the 15% discount and direct flight which is a great value.

For this flight to Taipei I did a comparison:

SQ SIN-TPE 46,750 miles + $383 tax
CX SIN-HKG-TPE 50,000 miles + $74 tax

So technically I saved $309 by spending 3,250 miles which I think is a great value. 3,250 miles can't even get you a one way to Kuala Lumpur (KUL) in this case.

Of course there are some differences between SQ and CX on their regional configuration for their regional routes. I've tried both and are fine with either of them.

I myself have never taken business class in long haul before (will get around to it someday...) but have tried the CX longhaul seat when I was flying TPE-HKG, wonder how it is like in sleeping mode. I noticed from Singapore to New York the amount of miles required by both SQ and CX are similar but the fuel surcharge by SQ is about $670 more... :(

Anyways, I do hope to try SQ's new business class in the future when I have the time and money for it hehe.. :s22:

yeah thats was what it was shown to me on SQ website

cathay and SQ are on different membership, amazing that u have accumulate both membership points..ur spending must be huge

Actually I earn miles from the credit cards, not from flying since I don't fly for business. All my flights are for leisure.... Most of my miles are stuck in credit cards, I'll transfer them when I need to redeem for flights.

I usually try to swipe CC to earn miles on everyday spending. Now if only we can swipe credit card for hawker center food... :s22:

I have never used miles before always just redeem ntuc vouchers. Is miles per dollar rebate better than a 3.1% cash rebate for ntuc vouchers? Have to take into acct the redemption fee for miles and the tax.

Great insight regarding the taxes payable. I have not redeemed Asiamiles before, perhaps it is time to do so :)
