This is how Dell overcome the 4 Primary partition limitation using a combination of Primary and Logical partition.

If you want plenty of free space, you can do this:

1. Format the whole hard disk

2. Create two partition C: and D:

3. Install Windows and programs on C: and store data on D:

4. Backup everything to an eternal hard disk with program like Acronis or Ghost 12.0

Note: You'll lose your Utility and Recovery partition.

I suppose you can delete your Recovery partition and create a new partition.

Check with Dell before you do that.

Hi. Another dumb question. Sorry. If you are using laptop from the power, do u remove your battery (when it is fully charged)? This has been a usual practice for me, until i read the user manual which says that it is best to use it with the battery in it at all times so as to preserve the BIOS???

Thanks.

I do. I was told that removing the batt while on AC will increase the lifespan of the batt.

I also don't remove the battery, it's simply too troublesome to do so.

Discharge your battery to 40% and keep it in a cool place.

Your computer will be sitting on 3 "legs". The other leg is on the battery.

New purchase of Inspiron 1420 NB

Hi all,

I'm pretty new here, but I've been trying to follow and read the posts here. I have finally made my purchase of a Dell NB this afternoon, after procrastinating for 1 year. Contemplating between HP, Sony and Dell.

Got it for $1,730.19. No idea when is the delivery date yet as just ordered online late afternoon. Unable to speak to any CS/ Sales from Dell after holding the line for more than 20 mins. (-__-!!)

Seriously, after reading soo much in this thread I feel kinda lost as to what to do and lookout for upon receipt of my new toy. Afraid of the new Vista...

Appreciate any comments and advise.

You can check your order status here:

http://cs.ap.dell.com/support/orderstatus/index.aspx?c=sg&l=en

Once you receive your notebook, connect it to the power and start enjoying it. Keep power ON for about 13 hours for the first time.

If you mess up the C: drive don't worry, you can use Ctrl+F11 to bring the notebook back to Factory Default.

The support telephone number is on your Tax Invoice. Before calling support make sure you have the Service Tag handy (found under the notebook).

If you have problem just post here or contact Dell support. The folks here are very helpful.

Hi Diavonex,

Thanks much for your reply. :)

I am wondering how do I do the setup when it arrives. I've not selected any setup option during my purchase customisation. Is it anything tough?

The computer will prompt you on the setup when you power up.

Update Windows and antivirus.

You're suppose to give the new battery a good 13 hour charge.

It's up to you whether to remove the battery later to preserve it. Personally I can't be bothered.
