Hi there,

I have already run the DHAM from Dell.
check out that my HD current setting is already at QUIET mode.

However, the tool failed to set the HD mode to Performance or QUIET mode.

Still.... my HD is making the unusal clicking which is annoying when you're at a quiet environment.

I have also downloaded 2 Hitachi tools( cant remember the other one) only remember that is called ftools that check on Hitachi HDs. Also couldnt find any errors on the HD.

Are Hitachi HD suppose to perform like this?

If the DHAM didnt work, the Hitachi Feature Tool v1.97 should:
Set AAM to 191 or lower, APM at 0x80.

These values you mentioned are actually default values for Hitachi drives.
(Set AAM to 191 or lower, APM at 0x80)

My HD is already at AAM 128 and APM 0x80
I have tried increasing the AAM to 140, just for testing.
The faint clicking sound still exist but only slightly louder thats all.

I think my problem is not with the intensity of the clicking noise.
But I'm curious why the HD is making such noises as if it is seeking/reading when no activity is apparent.

when it makes these noises, does the harddisk led flash for a split second?

yes, the lights do flash for a split second.

I just realized that if I leave the notebook idle for a longer period after bootup, the HD will be quiet for a while.

guess I will have to learn to leave with it.

hi, it's not just dell, all the notebooks i have used will have occasional disk activity even when its idle. its perfectly normal

dunno why your 9100 has so many problems. I have had a 9100 for about a year and got no problems at all, despite heavy gaming.

anyway if anyone wants a perfect condition inspiron 9100 - used for 1 year, and no probs at all, the parts are all solid stuff - , pls pm me. i have also posted up on classified ads, i want to upgrade to the 9300.

i have a inspiron 9100 since apr 04.

at mar 05 the battery failed to charged and was replaced for free by dell.

in june 05 the graphics gard ati 9700 128mb failed and i paid about SGD700 for replacement [sadly they cant upgrade to a 9800] and other charges as my waaranty is 1 year.

now it's july 05 the ac adapter failed.

i have a dell dimension 8100 for 4 years now and the monitor failed in a year and the hard disk crashed in the end of 3rd year. my wife's dimension 8200 [i think] hardisk crashed in the end of third year was replaced free via waranty.

i think ultimately we need 3 years warranty ... if a desktop or laptop failed after 3years of original parts. that's fair ocs it must have expire it's life cycle, but if the parts failed after one year, w/o warranty ... cost of repair can be high.

i play SWG on my 9100 after i got it in 04. like EQ i think it's "crack" to me too so i need my 9100 to function everyday when i want it to be ... now my ac adaptor has failed it's like my lungs are not working and i cant breathe properly.

dell tho used to be ugly has improved it's looks. the parts they offer if u configure well can go up to top-notch. with XPS models they now stand up front to compete with top gaming machines ....

i'm not sure if i will go back to dell again when my system is outdated, or will i go back to desktop n be immobile for gaming ... guess i'll decide in 1.5years. i have already switched to a 12" ibook now for my mobile net surfing outdoors.

is this a blog? i am waiting for dell to come back to me since 9am this morning, they have my ac adapter for replacemtn, takes 5-15days for delivery, SGD6 for the cord, SGD55 for the ac adapter. with GST n delivery charges it'll cost SGD100+. BUT ... they do not have the parts number so they cant quote me so i can placed my order .... they are hunting for the part number while i suffer with a dysfunctional 9100.

well if i have spare cash ... maybe i should upgrade to alienware for gaming ... and i will be out of this dell user club .... but in the meantime .... 9100 is a powerful machine [ok it crashes alot when i play SWG due incompatiblity in drivers]

anyone out here who finnaly finish my story .... if u know anywhere that sells a dell 9100 ac adapter or has a spare to sell .... pls let me know.

yes. Specifically, Hitachi and IBM HDD have the clicking sound issues. Other HDD brands have less sound issues. I guess it's something we'll have to learn to live with it.

I jus place an order for Dell 9300 yesterday. I been thinking whether to get this for very long....but finally decided! If u been following the deal of 9300, tis wk promotion is better. Cos u get a set with min 1.73Ghz compare to last wk deal 1.6ghz. The price is even lower price. I did not upgrade the warranty which i still think is there a need? can anyone advise is it worth getting the extended warranty? Wat is the different between the ProWireless 2200 n 2915? How abt DVD rewriter for upgrade or ext writer is better.

int writer is more convenient. you can decide to upgrade the warranty anytime during the 1st year of warranty

i find that 6000 n 9300 both big n ugly............510 look better but abit thick......700m is the best
