mmmmmm i been leaving my PC on 24/7 for the pass 3 years since Ryzen came out, but even before that all my previous setup has gone through at least 3 year or more, had one setup 5 years, but none of them had any issues in terms of hardware.

Then again, my room also pretty much aircon whole day and its pretty dry in my room. even after so long, there is no rusting or corrosion on the back of my computer, unlike some of the second hand item u see.

Sleep mode for me. I guess that considers 24/7 since i dont off main switch too unless power trip.

usually the pc at home ... u will upgrade before it will fail...

so lifespan doesnt really matter

if it fail.... usually internally very very dusty, fans cant move, overheated

the cost savings is so insignificant compared to a cup of bbt


for psu over 5 years, better not switch off... sometimes off already... psu cant boot up anymore...

because got air-con... without much maintenance... 10 years no problem

10 year mark... psu... fans failing

can last another 10 year, once the psu, fans are replaced...

and yes... I still serving some xxxMhz an xxxMB ram workstation

24/7 but idle and 24/7 under heavy load all the time will yield different results. Retail hardware are generally not built for 24/7 heavy usage.

Anyway if it is just left idle, there is no reason not to switch it off. It doesn't take long for a PC to boot up nowadays, so I don't see any reason to leave it on since it is just wasting precious resources. You can even set it to go to sleep mode after x number of hours, which is better than leaving it active.

I second this. With ssd now, how long does it take to start up? i used to keep mine on due to slow bootup to windows. Now i shut off wth SSD. It is a god sent tech progress.

1 thing for sure like what others said. Fans and the other mechanical parts like hardisk (we all know for what ya.)sure gg 2-3 years based on my 24/7 routine previously. PSU not that bad, 4-5 years average life span.

Alot of people claimed their pc lasted 4 years and beyond. My guess is probably not much usage daily.

IMHO.
It depends on the environment and configuration.
Some thoughts that could be helpful to have a good lifespan if running 24/7.

a) Aircon.
b) Right casing and fan setup for optimal cooling.
c) Rock solid platform for desktop to reduce shock or vibration.
d) Lower RPM HDD to reduce heat.
e) Windows will have write activities in the background, use HDD as boot up device instead of SSD.

I am not sure if you have tried using Windows 10 on a mechanical drive of late. It is exactly a lot of activities hitting the drive and making the response time unbelievably slow. Perhaps I am spoiled by my SSD, but I cannot remember a mechanical drive being that slow since Windows 7. I believe a good SSD will be able to take substantial amounts of write throughout its lifetime, so I don't think it is something that we need to be concerned about.

i have 2 pc that lasted more than 4 years
use as media pc and for gaming.
all the PSU in my PC lasted more than 6 years.
so it is not uncommon for PC to last more than 4 years.
