For tomb raider will be at the wave hitting the ship causing shipwreck scene...the forest running part only add the forest spaciousness for soundstage

black panther will be korea scene and the ending ship fly around scene

endgame will be the final battle scene thing flying around

Alita will be the fighting scene and the motorball scene the fingers shoot out scene cutting all alita limbs the atmos audio ultilize quite weak

Hi , do you get all your these relatively new movies w/ atmos on Blu Ray?

Is Dolby Atmos actually worth the trouble? Do any of you guys have it? What's your take?

I was advised to do up a 5.1.2 with the 2 being in ceiling speakers. But the missus isn't too keen on punching 2 holes in the false ceiling.

I can explore adding those upwards pointing speakers instead for the atmos but i read those ain't as effective as the ceiling types.

Any inputs will be appreciated.

IMHO, If you do not wan the 'messy' look with 5.1 in the hall, stick with a nice 2.1 or 2.0 . a decent pair with the right AV Receiver can also bring out 'surround' effects too.

i have 2 x 5.1 setup, 1 in hall and 1 in room. the hall is a very basic setup as compared to the room one. but i always felt the room acoustic is better. maybe the sound 'escape' ? i am no expert but i felt its better to have the immersive 5.1 experience in an enclosed room. my 2 cents worth opinion :o

Subjective on movie title but majority 4K UHD have Atmos track.
Standrad blu ray some have DTS-X/DTS-Master Audio track
than Dolby Atmos.

For sure an enclosed room is better, abit like those ang mo countries where people casually put a whole HT in the basement. But in SG we are limited by space. If 1 is willing to dedicate 1 room to HT then all the better. Otherwise its about making do.

Mainly 4KUHD bluray will come with dolby atmos audio format as for 1080p bluray i not sure.......

Warner is nice, even their new BR discs have Atmos generally..
But Sony tends to force you to upgrade to their UHD version..

Or get the iTunes movies, many are 4k on the USA site. Local movies tend to be HD only and non Atmos.

So instead of placing 2 atmos speakers in the ceiling, I intend to place 2 more normal satellites at height in front, above my 2 front speakers.

So it will be 2 speakers up and 2 speakers down. Any idea if that will work for a bigger soundstage and also some atmos?

Anyone with 5.1.2, with the 0.0.2 being in ceiling speakers currently?

Does it activate when you play non-atmos content? I believe it will still activate and add to the soundstage if you are say watching cable tv?

I have a 5.1.2 setup but mine is a height speaker pointed toward the calibrated center.

No it wont activate. It is all about the player and content. If your player is not atmos capable or the content is not atmos, it will not run. Usually, you will see on the av receiver if you are playing atmos..

It will likely however go down to dolby digital surround or equivalent

Thanks.

If i understand correctly you are saying if you switch the avr to dolby surround or DTS for example, the 2x ceiling speakers will still activate right?

That's weird. Afaik, I can just click on 'Dolby Digital + Neural:X' which upmixes the 5.1 audio content to make it use the Atmos speaker when needed. Result is front stage feels bigger and higher sometimes depending on the content. But that's cos my Atmos speaker is from the front. But it does not mean the audio will feel as real as 3D. It just feels wider.

As per the description in my receiver's manual,
"DTS Neural:X
Enables an immersive audio experience for older content. DTS Neural:X
can upmix your stereo, 5.1 or 7.1 content to take full advantage of all
speakers in your surround sound system."

Similarly, with a higher end receiver, you can use Auro 3D which also upmixes the audio. But it requires even more speakers in your ceiling for it to work.

Yes but slight ambient sound only......get a solid 5.1 if you had the budget spent more on better fronts soundstage will be wider as well

Upmixing is possible even with poor quality TV sources. But garbage in garbage out
Don’t even expect DVD lossy quality surround sound.
You can’t make a silk purse from a sow’s ear.

Speaker placement also matters. Simply planting a speaker above near the ceiling won’t suddenly make the sound fabulous.
Take a detailed approach to placement using the guidelines available online.

Yeah, placing my 5.1.2 in such a configuration. Not exactly down the the exact angles but close enough.

It's almost impossible for me to get better fronts due to the tv console design. The center speaker is a big problem. I only have 6 inches of height from the console to the bottom of the tv. There is no matching bookshelves center that low. So the satellites i have got will have to do for HT and some music.

I might do up a dedicated stereo setup in my spare room with turntable and all in future. But that is going to be another project!
