DSLR or Mirrorless (i.e. Micro 4/3)

Hi everyone. I am thinking of investing in a camera. However, I'm not sure if I should get a DSLR or mirrorless camera.

I will be using the camera mostly for my travelling. I will also be recording some videos for memories keepsake.

For DSLR, I'm looking at Nikon D5500 and Canon D70. For, mirrorless, I don have one in mind yet.

My budget is around 1.5K (of course the lower the better).

Can anyone advise me on whether I should get a DSLR or mirrorless camera and which model would you recommend?

mirrorless can be aps-c right? not necessarily micro 4/3

Sony A6000 will fit your requirement.

If you can live with fixed lens, the new Fuji X70 is good too.

Invest in the lenses, not the camera. Camera only handheld gratification. It's the lenses that will stick with you through the years while you change countless of cameras.

See which brand of lenses you like, the variety, the ease of 2nd hand, resale, etc, and decide.

FujiFilm X-T10 but their video capability is meh...

DSLR is too big and heavy, I believe you might want to leave it at home when the weight and size gets to you!.

a6000 best bang for bucks for anything less than 1000$, can buy a good prime lens on top of it

i was deciding between dslr and mirrorless, mainly to take photos when travelling and did not regret getting my a6000. honestly found it slightly troublesome already despite its lightweight body, especially when shopping etc, and felt damn relief that i didnt choose to get a 70d.

try the autofocus... and the viewfinder... on the mirrorless

if you are comfortable, get mirrorless

I am OVF person but after looking at X-T1. I am quite sold to EVF...

Did I regret? nah. X-T1 the AF improved as we using get firmware updates and what best, another FW update will improve this camera again before the next model will be release.

The new X-Pro 2 AF is so good.... so DSLR are aging gems....

but we cannot denied the D5 and D500 from Nikon LOL

indeed... is getting better ... but only for the highend top of the line model

get a cheaper dslr on par with it, with extra money for lens

I renewed my hobby interest with a mirror less 4/3rd Olympus but still find it heavy for my holiday traveling needs, even though with the few lens in the camera bag.

Lately for my travel needs, I now only go with my trusted GoPro Hero4 Black and my iPhone6plus.... Very good combo.

Hi. You might wish to consider Olympus Pen series. I have been using them, and they are handy in size. Many affordable lens to choose from too.

Sony: Great function but the size and lens just don't fit each other. Lens always bigger then body size.

Canon: Limited lens for mirrorless model and lens issue like Sony.

Panasonic GF-7 / GM5 : Both models are small and portable. if you looking for a camera just with minimum setting (more like point and shoot with SLR image) this would be the two model which you are look into.

Olympus E-PL7: Body are slightly bigger then Panasonic GF7/GM1. But the camera menu is easy to access when you attempt make any setting or change.

APS-C/FF sensor are larger. Law of optics needs to be obeyed, so larger sensor equates to larger lens. Larger sensors equates to better image quality or low light performance. Sadly, it also equates to a larger lens.

So, u need to first understand what is ur priority first. if size is a major concern and u r not going to invest in lenses, then I would go for a high end PnS (like the RX100). No point spending alot of $$ on a camera which u will not want to bring out. Also dun spend too little $$ on a camera which is so limiting that u dun like to use it

I'm a sony A6000 user and on lazy days, I would pick up my wife's RX100 instead. I'm using the 18-105F4 most of the time and I admit i find it too bulky sometimes. still i will make effort to bring it out

I had a Nex 7 and a D4.

If you are looking at something portable, then forget about DSLR and go for a mirrorless camera.

If you need the focusing speed, then go for a DSLR but doubt you will need it unless you are shooting something fast moving.

Fixed lens camera (e.g. Sony RX1R) are for a niche group of people IMHO. If TS need to ask the question dslr or mirrorless, then a fixed lens mirrorless is definitely for him/her

Yah I agree with you my compare it not apple to apple. My compare is just simple end user getting a camera. Like buying handbag.

To my wife, Camera is camera.. Don't care 4/3, FF and APC.

I have a EPL-3 (Olympus) and 7D (Canon).

For travel, I would recommend a OM-D E-M10 mark II for stills and maybe a Go-Pro. It fits your budget and should have some left for basic accessories.
