There is no f/1.5 50mm lens, there is f/1.2, f/1.4, f/1.8 50mm lens for your selection. Photographers uses numerous different lens for portrait depends on scene and subject.

The commonly used focal lengths are 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 135mm, 200mm depending on your subject and how you want the result to be

The price of a f/1.4 50mm lens should be nominally between SGD400-SGD1200 depends on make and model. For starter, you don't need a f/1.4 if you just want to try things out. a f/1.8 50mm lens can do as much wonders as a f/1.4 if you are a good photographer. The f/1.8 50mm cost roughly less than SGD200

The lens don't matter so much, it's the eye behind the viewfinder :)

If for decades that photographers have been producing award winning photos, it will be a strange phenomenal that only good equipments can give you good results. Don't you think so ? If you are really good, I suppose a disposable 35mm camera will win you something if your photograph tells a story.

Having better equipments merely stretch your capabilities to produce good works in extreme conditions, equip you with more versatility managing your scenes.

Generally if you want more control over your scene, you choose a body with sufficient controls over your aperture, exposure time, shutter speeds, output format and so forth. Different lens for different scenes. Having good photograph manipulation software also give you an edge when post processing your photographs.

You probably would wanna invest in good external strobes, a sturdy tripod, such basic items. For caring of your gears, a sufficiently large dry cabinet and some cleaning pen and sensor cleaning items.

That's really about it. The rest is up to you. If you ask for my opinion, I say 40% your gear and 60% your handwork walking around, study on places worth taking pic, planning for your shot and good subjects and scenes.

You can try a few renown camera shops like Cathay Photo (Marina/Peninsula Plaza), MS Color, John 3:16(Funan) etc. Find out more from Nikon Price Lists (Singapore) 2009 -2012

Actually , i've being taking photos for a few months , but using my friend's camera.
I've learnt photography for half a year so i wouldn't say i'm completely new to the scene.
The reason for buying a decent camera is because i wouldn't want to borrow camera from a friend again...and again.
Thanks , i got it . I have a budget , which is pretty low and whatever you have explained totally fit my criteria.
Really , thank you for your enlightenment . Good day sir .

IT Shows are a horrible place. Rarely any good deals and the "bundle" is usually cheap rubbish.

Go IT Show only buy on impulse and subject to time and sales pressure. Then u also have to squeeze with people, get jammed, join queue, get divided attention from salesperson. What for? Savings not consistent. Sometimes more expensive than shops. U pay extra dollars for cheapo accessories. Some accessories u don't even need but just push to u.

What lens

If you are using an APS C camera (eg Nikon DX), 50mm is good for portraits, with full frame (Nikon FX), 85mm is the classic focal length. The bigger the aperture (the smaller the max f number), the better you can throw the background out of focus, thereby isolating your subject in a portrait. Go for minimum f1.8, if you can afford it then f1.4. f 1.4 can be a lot more expensive than f1.8. If I remember correctly a Nikon 50mm f 1.8 is pretty cheap, just a few hundred dollars.

For beginner it is always the kit lens + 50 f1.8

For me after so many years, I would just want to use 35 f1.8 and 85 f1.8

get any brand off clubsnap bns will do, no brand preferance needed as you will either get used to the system or you can get a better body. Just know what you need and want to shoot will do a D7000 or a K5iis is good enough less you need gimmicks which you don't really used fully at all

Try pentax K5 body + 70mm DA Limited or 77mm FA Limited.

If get pre-owned, i believe 1K settle everything + tripod + dry cabinet.

google pentax 70mm DA Limited or 77mm FA Limited and find the forum review. Some reviews comes with potraits photos.

It is very worth it in my opinion =)

Any recommendation for Nikon DSLR camera model with the following features:
- Built-in antishake
- Live View (good to have not a must)
- In-body autofocus
- Not full frame

Thanks.

There is no built-in antishake for all Nikon DSLR bodies. VR is found in all Nikkor lens.

Just go to the Nikon website look for bodies that can support D lens or stated that it is a Lens servo in the body. However for highest speed focus, you will want to go for AF-S lens.
