i got a secondary rig as HTPC and some gaming (FPS and sports games)

i just got a R7 250 1GB couple of months back.

felt slight lag and drops in frame rates when playing sniper ghost warrior 2.

reason why i chose GTX950 i suppose its the best performing gfx card under 400W.

my PSU is 400W and do not wish to change it.

will upgrading to GTX 950 see a significant performance change or it will still be the same as its bottleneck by the E8400?

appreciate constructive advise. :o

UDPATE:

Hi, as advised from a fellow forumer here. i tried to buy a XEON X5472 from aliexpress but the package failed to deliver.

tried overclocking the E8400 but i failed as it makes the system unstable. refused to boot at times. not sure if its the P965 chipset issue or the RAM

Currently I found someone selling Q9550 @ S$70. Would appreciate some advise if the upgrade is worthy over E8400 for gaming?

most likely would not consider upgrading GPU at the moment.

Overclock your E8400 to 4GHz. Can consider GTX 1050 or GTX 950 (for price drop) if you can wait or just hoot RX460 2GB from $179 right now....

Seems that the XFX $179 ran OOS... Can wait for restock and use Friday DBS Lazada coupon code to get it for $159.

Yes your PSU will still suffice well...

Your current PC may use even less power than the following figure since test system uses Intel's top range hexa core CPU. Overclocked system will probably draw about 10-20W above test system. Nevertheless, still well within the power envelope of your depreciated PSU.

May i know what PSU you using btw? Forgot to ask....

There does not seem much point in spending money to upgrade a E8400 system for gaming. Makes more sense to just use it for HTPC and office work.

I have a E8400 SFF and recently upgraded it with 4 X 2GB of DDR2 1066 RAM. Ended up not using and left in storage.

Read first post.

It's already his secondary rig mainly for HTPC.

The GPU upgrade can make this secondary PC a nice 4K playback machine too.

wow the xeon CPU is cheap.

anyway. the 965P chipset seems to have problem overclocking wolfdale.

will auto reboot and bios will reset to stock settings during a period of usage. (unstable)

hence I'm sticking to stock now. also not sure is it the RAM (667MHz) or my OC skill not good:o

thanks for the feedback money face, contemplating on the gtx950 (looking at some second hand ones) but still don't wish to spend too much on this old pc :s11::o

Even at 4ghz OCed the E8400 will be running at almost 100% most of the time with crysis 3 and going by that I would hazard a guess that sniper ghost warrior 2(cryengine3) will too.

You can upgrade your CPU to the XEON X5472 for about SGD$25(Link to one of them) and that should help alleviate a lot of the bottlenecking of the GPU. Yes the CPU can be use without an adapter for the LGA775 and you can go for the GPU recommended on above post.

No. Xeon X5470 might not work. Because E8400 is Socket 775 and the Xeon is Socket 771 and Is running on FSB of 1600. Most of the 775 motherboard
can only support FSB of 800 or up to 1333 if overlcocked using DDR2
But If the motherboard is using DDR3 , then it will work . But again 771 on 775 motherboard ? Anyone have tried?
If Yes. I will also want to try out .
Thanks

There's hardware mod to run LGA771 on LGA775 socket...

Hi Guys,

appreciate all the advise that i got.

now I am 'torn' between a few selections for the graphics cards. main reason i dont wanna spend to much on an aging PC.

GTX 750 TI - reason for chosing this old card because of the price. $179

RX460 - $199

GTX950 - above mid $200 ranging from $22X to $28X

care for any quick advise as there is a lazada promo ($20 off) today :D:D

thanks once again :o

LOL sure really wont bottleneck the E8400? :o

so the GTX 950 and RX460 is out?
Of course will la. Makes way more sense to get the GTX 1060 3GB now than any other lower end cards right now.

Next time you upgrade CPU platform, you can benefit from a more drastic performance boost over RX460 and GTX 950.

Mind you GTX 1060 3GB is almost double the performance of RX460.

GTX 1060 3GB is around a GTX 970:
