I got a question for all you mahjong experts.. If I am doing ping hu and i am only lacking a ka long, and upper leg throws the ka long, and I throw away the end of one of the other sets e.g. 4 wan (2 3 4 wan set), can I game when someone throws 1 wan before I draw another tile?

Extension on the above, what if I have 1 2 3 4 5 6, and I throw away 1, can I game if someone throws 4 or 7 before I draw another tile?

It depends on the house rule, some allow, some don't. But technically, you can, as long you don't game the same card you just threw out.

So it is always better to ask the host which rule he/she using.

scenario 1: if throw 4, immediately after cannot eat/game 1 or 4


scenario 2: if u throw 1, and u have remaining cards 2,3,4,5,6...... u shift 2,3,4 one side as one set which is already erm... made a set. then u pluck out 5 and 6 to eat the 4 or 7 to game. that is permissible, ie, u have to look at the 1,2,3,4 and 4,5,6 or 5,6,7 as different sets and nothing to do with the 1 you threw.


then again, diff house, diff rules.


to note again, a good practice is to always take the card that people throw aka winning card, and place it together with your own cards to make a complete set or a complete 14 card hand.


a lot of people are plain lazy. like when someone throws a winning card, the winner simply yell 'pong' or 'gao' and then exposes his/her own cards without taking back the winning card and expects everyone to know/read the complete hand.


please, if u want my hand, make a bit of effort to show me what you have and not expect me to read for you and know how many tai u gao and how much to pay u. this type is call family/sifu never teach properly, no standard kind of play. sooner or later other players will be unhappy or quarrel esp when u keep winning and keep being lazy

Just wanna ask is it common that usually people pass on the dealer even if no one wins but as long as there is a kong? I happen to play that way with my aunts but never heard of this rule before... Thanks in advance!
