all my friends discussing to retire in Malaysia, but i think i wont get used to it.

at most just stay there a few weeks and come back.

the good thing abt SG is everything u need is around the neighbourhood. when population density is high, u get to see people, neighbours and friends when u leave ur house. i feel this is warming.

if i live alone in a big house in malaysia, come out walk and barely see anyone, i feel depressing and isolated. especially when u have free time to spare but nothing much u can do or interact.
thats why u need to plan things to do, not just stay at home whole day.

in Malaysia, u can do road trips/travel ard Malaysia? Malaysia is so big, south got JB close to SG, center got KL, Melaka, up north got Penang and Ipoh, West side of Malaysia got Mersing and Kuantan, can fly to other side of Malaysia like Sabah. just plan every month visit one area and stay there for 2-3 weeks, surely you will not be bored anymore.

You retiring in Calgary ? wow
that is such a nice place ! Hope to go back there again, one of the few most beautiful places I have visited.
I am retired in Calgary.
It is a nice city. Only about an hour drive to the Rocky mountains. Lots of natural beauty and tons of activities to do.

When did you visit Calgary? Not a common spot for Singaporeans to visit as it is out of the way. Will need to either drive from Vancouver or Fly from Vancouver to Calgary. Extra traveling. But I think it is worth the travel.

Thread for discussions related to retirement.

Come share what you are doing in retirement.
Food. Travels. Activities. Fitness. Health.
Also can discuss how you were able to retire. Money. Investments.

Realized there isn't really a thread in EDMW on this topic specifically.
If still hv aging parent, spend more time with them after your retirement..

You brought up an important point.

People think a lot about "retiring" as no longer needing to do work they dislike.

But the absence of work doesn't necessarily bring joy either.

So many moving parts when planning retirement.

Yes bro, spend more time but not forgetting your spouse too.
Both are the special people in our life.
The rest like BFF, whatever. Is rubbish.
I guess is different for different people. Cannot generalize one size fits all.

Spend time with whoever you want. Freedom to choose.

What time is your volunteer work? Is it regular hours? Mon to fri? Weekends. Effectively like a job but without pay?
Once a mth reception counter duty, every 3 mths got big event 1 Sat n Sun whole morning gone just to help cutting n packing lunchbox for followers. Used to do IT support on Sat nite for shifu, also once a mth, but stop for the time being.

Yah, doing work with no pay 🤣 but ok de, cos I enjoy helping in temple, the peaceful n calm feeling one can hardly get from outside world, esp in sg.

Sounds like it is only on weekends then. Sat or and Sun. Once a month? Every 3 months?

That's not much. Why you say you got not much time for other things? What you do the other 28 days a month?

So many things can do.

Wake up any time you want.
Avoid crowd.
Slower pace.

Go gym, go exercise. Water the plants.
Go on more frequent short trips. Clean the house. Watch / re-watch your fav drama movies.

If your friends also retired. Can go out meet up stay out late.

Learn to cook something new.

Get a pet.

not yet retiring.

now saving up for retirement. I still need to pay off my current 3rm flat (in 4 years time) so I can fully utilise it as rental income for retirement. target to retire at 55, still a couple of years away. I will then spent my rental income in Thailand for retirement (probably just need half of it and saved the other half), no need to touch my savings, and my CPF payout time comes, I have 3 source of income (saving & investments + rental income + CPF payout).

i will not be retiring in BKK cos the cost of living there is rising also but instead i will move up north to my gf's hometown instead. i don't mind staying in the country side, less stress, more scenic and chill.

i already planned my Thailand exploration map to spent my retirement. Will buy a toyota hilux and do road trips within Thailand, maybe become a Thailand trip "influencer", or do a small airbnb with tour service.

Thailand retirement visa is easy to apply, just need a $30k~ SGD bank account to open in Thailand. Then you get yearly retirement visa (renew every year and maintain that $30k~ SGD bank account in Thailand).
Besides doing roadtrip, any particular place you prefer to settle down ? ChiangMai?
