With combination of ur cash savings, and follow by ur cpf payouuts, then including passive income, if any

technically can tong with cash savings alone from 55 till 65, then draw from FRS, if really want to retire

but from then on, have to live within a budget of ard $2k from 55 till 65, then from 65 collect FRS monthly payout of ard $1.7k

but at least a basic safety net is established
People have milestones like finish O level, A level or poly,. For men, we sacrifice our best years and do NS, which is another milestone

Next is university. If not, go and work.

Aim for promotion. If you start as waiter, surely you hope to become restaurant manager one day? That's a milestone.

Get married. That's a mile mountain not a milestone because marrying a Singapore woman is very expensive.

Next is slog 25 years to bring up children. It's a milestone and you heave a sign of relief after slogging.

Now finally, you look at the next milestone. Retirement.

The last ten years of our life, in sickness and pain. Some people wish they could die to end it all. Bedridden or wheelchair bound. Either wear diapers or have urine bag. Some are not aware of their suffering even though they are suffering because... dementia.

The final destination is death.

Planning to retire in 3 years once my dividend portfolio hits my target investment size hahah
Once a gambler always a gambler.

Are you sure you can quit when or IF your "dividend portfolio" reaches the target?

The big danger is losing all your savings and "dividend portfolio" in your bets. Not a few people have lost...

For me, the hardest is 55 - 65. This is where employers shun us. Find ways to remove us.

Yet our kids are in their tertiary education and need more money.

After 65, I am home free. CPF Life will pay out.

My dividend portfolio hit my target already.

I semi retired. Thinking maybe do some work for another 6 years till my youngest is older. Can grow my monthly dividends more.

seriously another retire thread
hiaz

and how is 2k per mth and FRS1.7k per mth is safety net sio??
Out of 41,000 active CPF members who turned 55 in 2025, 73.4% (about 30,094 individuals) met either the Full Retirement Sum (FRS) or the Basic Retirement Sum (BRS) while owning a property

Take out property from the equation and the figure may even fall to <50%

so not alot even getting $1.7k from frs

but congrats if u r the outlier with >$1m+ portfolio

depends on your situation and needs.

1) married? wife with job?
2) kids?
3) elderly to support?
4) house fully paid or still on loan?
5) need to own a car?
6) what kind of lifestyle? can downgrade?
7) passive income? (investment, collect rent)
8) medical condition?

I have compared mine with my closed friends, very big difference because our situation and needs are different.

no kid to support, partner has own income, no elderly to support, house fully paid, no need car, simple lifestyle, some passive income, no medical condition.

sibei relax.

My role model hahah

I started my dividend portfolio quite late as I was chasing "growth" previously

Only really started focusing on dividends in the last 3 years or so
One strategy is to build up your portfolio amount via growth investing.

When the portfolio amount has become more substantial, divest to invest in dividend.

Dividend investing will constrain the total portfolio potential... especially when it needs a good amount of capital for noticeable returns.

CPF Board should further distinguish between
1. those that met FRS
vs
2. those that chose BRS with a property pledged.

How many percent and what numbers. Then the data is more meaningful. I have a philosophy in life. Never be the last. Because if you are running last position, the bear will eat you. Hope not to be insensitive, if everyone is getting $1.7k per month, we should try to get more.
