I just looked through eight's value eight plan (cheapest 5G) and to my understanding, the free roaming voice calls is only limited to 4 APAC countries - India, Malaysia, Thailand and Taiwan.

other than that, the rest of the world are either not supported (no VoLTE roaming support) or must pay extra... or higher plan like lucky eight or triple eight.

is the above correct?

I used voice roaming while in Japan, no bill shock.
Made outgoing calls, and received incoming (Forwarded from SingTel) calls while I was in Japan Feb this year

it is supported in many countries but not available to value eight subscribers. apparently only the 4 listed are FREE for value eight subscribers.

Update: I overlooked that International Roaming Group A is for "all plans" so it's 4 listed + some more. but definitely not worldwide it seems?

International Roaming (Group A)
Part of all plans – check the eight app for your entitlements and usage. Add-ons can be purchased in-app at $3.88/GB.

I think you're conflating data roaming with VoLTE roaming. They're two different things.

All Eight plans include allotments for data roaming in these 3 groups of countries/territories:
  • "Local" bucket: Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong
  • "APAC" bucket: varies according to plan
  • "Group A" bucket
And all Eight plans (except Data-Only Plans) include 288 VoLTE voice roaming minutes. Roaming voice minutes should work everywhere VoLTE roaming is supported, including in Group B, C, and D countries/territories even if you don't purchase data allotments there. Incoming SMS also works in all roaming countries/territories that support VoLTE.

I would add that you might get lucky and have 2G or 3G voice calling and/or SMS when roaming internationally. If so, that's an unpublished benefit. Eight's roaming table doesn't include any information about possible 2G or 3G roaming.

am trying to address VoLTE roaming (voice roaming). the data roaming is just copy and paste from the eight page. I'm not discussing about data roaming.

are you saying that even if I'm on the value eight plan, and I travel to Hong Kong (which is International Group A), I can receive incoming calls, even though there is no VoLTE support based on the table?

Hong Kong does not have VoLTE support listed in Eight's roaming table, so Eight does not support traditional voice calling there.

If voice calling works over VoWiFi from Hong Kong or over SmarTone's 3G network (which they still operate, I think), that would be an unpublished bonus.

Thanks for the update.

Not sure if this lag due to June Holidays.

But if roaming lag is roam partner issue right, so strange all eight roam partners seem to lag recently.

i doubt so, i tested during difference timing even at nite (late night) super off peak period, this possibility can be eliminated completely.

hi folks, just wondering for eight subscribers with say, another Singtel number, has any of you tried call forwarding from Singtel to your eight number when you're overseas? eight has free roaming calls right? but did you get charged from Singtel?
just come back from a short tourbus trip to Ipoh.

Bought $8 e-sim for my office iphone and activated call forwarding on my office Singtel number to the eight e-sim number at the Tuas customs. Thereafter, switch off my office Singtel number.

In the tourbus to Ipoh, my client called my office Singtel number and I was able to receive the call via my eight e-sim. She was surprised why I can ans the call even in Msia.

see above image, 90XX XXXX is my office Singtel number

no roaming charges on my Singtel number, just normal local calling minutes

actually you should leave your Singtel on roaming (so that can still receive SMS for OTP and so on), and see how does Singtel do the call forwarding thingy - and check whether they impose any charges (i.e. whether Singtel still consider it as local call forwarding when one is overseas with the Singtel line on roaming).

nonetheless thanks for sharing about the call forwarding working as expected when the line is switched off in SG 🙏

Eight mobile data roaming is unusable in KSL hotel room. Regardless of which telco I choose, LTE or 5G, webpage doesn't load and even if they did, it took a long time. My friend on Vivifi doesn't faced the same problem. Ended up, I need him to hotspot for me to use. Haiz.

Regardless which telcos u roam to in bolehland, they are all capped at 5Mbp+—. This could explain why u experience similarly regardless which telcos u roam to.

Singtel didn't charge at all for the forwarded calls?
No i did not get any extra charges billed for those calls.

Based on other's advise, I setup my call forwarding while in Singapore, and turned off my SingTel line when done. So my SingTel line did not even register at any foreign networks while I was travelling. Not sure if that is the reason.

Thank you very much for the valuable information.

So it's better to do it before leaving town. 👍

I don't see how that would matter. If Singtel is forwarding/diverting voice calls to another Singapore mobile number, it's forwarding voice calls to another Singapore mobile number. Regardless of where your phone happens to be.

Maybe the potential concern is not being able to set up call forwarding while overseas? It should still be possible, but mobile roaming can be a bit of an adventure with no guarantees. So I think that concern has some merit.
