Elite: Dangerous Newsletter #84 - From Frontier Developments

Stats from the Elite: Dangerous Galaxy

This week we're digging deep into our galaxy and taking a look at how Elite: Dangerous players like to play.

We've crunched the numbers and discovered that the average play time across ALL Elite: Dangerous players in our community on PC, Mac (from the Frontier Store and Steam) and on Xbox One is a massive 64 hours. It's a remarkable figure, and we want to thank you for spending so much time in our galaxy

We also learned just over 1,200 players have spent more than 1,000 total hours in the galaxy each since launch. That's an average of four and a half hours every day from our most dedicated players since December 16.

And all that time spent adds up to a lot of exploration. So far an incredible 11.3 million systems have been explored by players. At the current rate of play the Elite: Dangerous community will have charted the galaxy's 400 billion star systems in 23,417 years. We'll be finished by the year 25,432, so here's hoping 255th century computers are PC compatible.

Just in case, remember: the more people who join us out there, the faster we'll get the job done!

Peek of the Week
A look at the sleek Imperial Eagle. Imperial engineers have transformed the Eagle into a war machine, with a medium central hardpoint and faster straight line speed.

The Close Quarter Combat (CQC) Championships are the ultimate 34th century gladiatorial contest between Elite: Dangerous pilots. CQC thrusts players into intense PVP action within the Elite: Dangerous galaxy.

Equip your spacecraft with a unique loadout and compete in Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Capture The Flag gametypes in custom-built arenas, supporting up to twelve players at launch.

Hello, Commanders

Last week, we announced Elite Dangerous: Horizons – another full season of major gameplay expansions for Elite Dangerous, beginning later this year with ‘Planetary Landings’.

I’ve been fascinated by the exploration of space since I was young, and especially with the almost unimaginable scales involved. Going down to the surfaces of planets was a key part of my dreams of exploration, and soon we'll realise that dream in Elite Dangerous.

We're beginning with airless, rocky worlds – places where a great deal of new gameplay can take place. These are planet-sized sandbox environments, with all sorts of things to discover hidden on them. You'll find surface starports, crashed ships, mineral deposits, hidden bases and more.

These worlds are gigantic, and - like the open galaxy - you'll be able to go anywhere. You'll be able to fly over the surface in low orbit and choose your spot to land, you'll be able to venture out in your Surface Recon Vehicle and hurtle across the surface at high speed. You'll be able to sneak around or go in all guns blazing. The nimble SRV is tiny compared to your ship, and is virtually invisible on a long range scanner – ship-based weapons will find it very hard to hold a lock on them, but airborne and ground-based players can explore the same worlds together, so watch the skies!

and ppl compare this with other space sims and wonder why those cannot deliver earlier.... it's been in continuous dev since 1997... (there are other factors as well)

oh and technically it still is in dev since Horizons is coming out... and more seasons to follow.

The CQC update progresses the tools we have to express story in the game, but it won't end there. We have some exciting plans for how we can expand the story further as we enter Season Two.

Progress on the beta release for the CQC update is continuing. It is due to have the internal candidate QA pass next week, this should be about a week in duration so all being well, the beta will be available for those with access on the week of August 31st.

Friendly reminder that current lifetime expansion ends on 14 Sep 2015.

An early look at the Federal Corvette, coming to Elite: Dangerous soon. The Corvette is the largest pilotable Federal ship, with some massive stopping power - two medium, three large and two huge hardpoints.

No idea how to land / dock the Corvette. Maybe allows smaller ships to dock with it, not sure yet. Group already has the cash to purchase a few.

Ships may not be getting much bigger but pilots can still expect meaningful changes to be introduced in Elite Dangerous: Horizons. Neither Frontier employee could/would elaborate but the duo did tease the possibility of bringing co-pilots into the equation. When asked whether or not we might finally see extra chairs being filled, either with AI crew members or other Elite: Dangerous players, Gapper smiled and complimented my "astute observation."

"We're going to make people think about ships in a slightly different way." Dowie promised.
