hey just asking if your CEL on for few years but the workshop never reset?
my car have this CEL problems for a few months and from gear 3-4 it loses power.
Its Volks Golf and i got quoted 4.8k for engine overhaul. But as long as i dont drive and accelerate too fast, its still okay but is it safe?

4.8k is not worth in my opinion. When I was googling for this problem, seems like most of the problems aren't too expensive to fix but some may require more urgent attention than others before it becomes even more expensive to remedy.

I guess most of the time such problems comes up when car are almost due for scrap. So if there's not much 'life' left, mebe should consider changing car already. Just my personal opinion.

I understand there is usually a markup on the parts but is 50% normal? I saw an invoice at the mechanic's desk for the sensor for $120 but I was charged $180:eek: labour was another $80!!!!

I am a regular customer:(

You need to release the rear lower control arm, separate the knuckle, remove the rear CV joint, in order to replace the lambda sensor. Would you rather pay $80 or DIY?

No qualms for labour. It's the parts markup which I am not sure if it's the norm. 20-30% sounds more reasonable but I don't run a workshop so just wondering what would be the usual markup for parts.

Reset no use cos will come back unless u change the part.

Power loss is more crucial but wat fault the scan show? Usually it pose no danger, just power loss and fc. Is engine overhaul really needed as per obd scan?

If u no intention to renew coe, then def dun bother spending 5k

Parts $180 labour $80. Total $260.
Hhmm it is within the ~$200+ quoted thou.

Sadly enough when we owners are agreeable with taking the plus/minus factor and not asking for the exact amount as in $200 how much?

It can be $210 or $290 and it really depend on how sharp their chopper is.

Fortunately or unfortunately, you saw his bill and realised so.
Else you may just be happy with your problem solved.

This is why lot of driver like to get their own parts from stockist and get the workshop just to quote on labour cost which you may consider doing if you dont find it more troublesome.

Al least you know the 'real cost' and dont feel like a carrot.

why dont u buy the sensor in sg and bring it to jb to install?
Guess not everyone feel this is worth it, as in the trouble for doing so.

I even got friend who is so busy and find it troublesome to drive to workshop to fix it.
He ask for a tow and tow his car to workshop(when his car is driveable wor) then pick it up after work.

Different strokes for different folks.

front typically cost more than rear lambda sensor. i assume yrs is front. but the replacement is quite straightforward so should not cost $80.

anyway, estimated price for lambda incl labor is about $200. so on the whole, u didn't pay too much. wat i normally do is order parts from ebay or online sources.

Actually I am thinking, the workshop will hold some risk while trying to get the part fixed. Like if it breaks or something to that effect. So I guess the 50% will cover such incidents so at least he doesn't lose money while trying to fix the part.

Anyway, since I didn't know what was the problem to begin with, I can't possibly just get the parts myself and ask the workshop to help me fix. So I guess sometimes spending this type of money cannot be avoided. Unless I am mechanic myself. :s13:

Oh the cost breakdown is this:

Overhaul Package as below,
Complete engine overhaul
1. Decarbonized carbon
2.Coolant
3. Wossner racing pistons
4. Timing chain
5. Timing tensioner
6. Timing guide
7. Cylinder head gasket
8. Fly wheel oil seal
9. KennOl endurance 5w40 engine oil+oil filter

Not sure if it worth it. the car still have about 5 years to go and i cant change the car as i got overloan for this car. So need to pay extra $40,000 just to clear the loan with bank

the scan shows 1 piston lost compression and 3 other pistons random "error" or smth.

No damager but when i overtake must be careful cannot rev too hard if not at gear 4 will slow down by itself when i try to accelerate

If fixing it can last 5 more years without other problems creeping up, then I guess it's ok. ~1k per year or $80 a month. The problem is usually more problems will crop up as the car ages.

Workshop can diagnose n u have the option to buy part yrself. Depending on yr relationship sometimes, it’s just a scan n my mech is always nice enough to plug in obd for free.

However i must stress our mechs here r not the best in troubleshooting. For eg, if u have engine misfire error, it can be coils, injectors etc and they cannot pinpoint. So from there, i bought from ebay at almost half price n ask him fit
