ok join in the fun....my simple setup...no raid no redundancy

amd 1055 95w
asus m488td
12gb ram
hitachi 500gb
wd 1TB black
2 x dual intel pt1000 nic
onboard realtek nic

been swapping between esxi and xenserver.....since 3.0 swap to 5.5....swap back to 4.0....swap back to 5.6.....swap back to 4.1....and now back to 5.6 fp1 :p
still prefer the flexibility of xenserver.... but esxi like bigger market.....more opportunity as well.....

things im running on my xenserver
1. pfsense
2. openvpn
3. wordpress server - windows svr 2008 r2
4. joomla server - windows svr 2008 r2
4. symantec endpoint protection manager - windows svr 2008 r2
5. ms sql 2005 server

esxi is notorious about their compatibility with drivers esp bad with non-server parts

check the HCL list before buying a raid card....not everyone is supported:s13:

dom0 and parent/child partition always have more drivers compatibility .....
ESXi is about ensuring that drivers are only certified and thus won't crash the kernel etc etc . .

Good and bad i suppose.. i could run Hyper-V last time without investing much into hardware..

Much like anime_toys08 & Heeroyuy84, my hands are itchy... and I like to play with computers but I don't work in the IT or computer lines...

So... trying out server stuffs at home are part of my hobby also... so I have ubuntu as my main server... samba as file server.... and my home wired in gigabit network... later on... it migrated to every computer became a distributed file servers... and transferring files between the gigabit network feels siok... thanks to you guys, now I understand the difference between esXi versus host based virtualization... though not much motivation to try out...

Interesting ideas though...

Ur EXSi able to run on raid 1 on the biostar mobo?

ESXi will never be able to work on software raid :o

I went with CentOS and Vmware Server 2 on software RAID1. Pretty good in linux and know how to tweak.. so performance is roughly the same. My Win2k3 vm booted in 1 second

take note that centos got several issues with sandy bridge.. no graphic support, thus all text, including installs. And SATA mode set to AHCI performance is epic.
