In my opinion it has everything to do with the religion because he believes so strongly in it so it defines his behaviour, which becomes affects his actions, affecting his character and eventually him as a person.
Please re-read my comment. Buddhist Teaching never teach a person to steal, to break on a promise.

if you said he strongly believes in it, he wouldn’t have committed such act. Would he?
Didn’t what you said rather contradictory ?

yup, my cousin literally just took our grandmother's savings left by our grandfather for her old age to start his renovation business, never repay nothing. his side of the family all staunch buddist too, doesn't help to add to my impression of religion.
If it’s ‘theft, embezzlement, fraud’ … just file a police report.

Can't even trust own son, told him to tear down the house after my passing, instead he asked his minions to justify to keep it.
