Fully agree with this :o .

Although basic electrical knowledge was taught in Sec School, many ppl forgot it. This showed that irrelevant stuffs are being taught in schools locally :( .

I strongly suggest basic electrical, plumbling knowledge to be taught to all Singaporean males during their NS :s8: , so they can apply the skill next time to their family or community :o .

What is the use when you can shoot M16, SAR21, MP5 etc, can fly F5, F16 but you dunno how to solve a simple electrical trip or change a leaky tap or WC parts :s8::s8::s8:

Somemore we can cut down on FTWs if we know how to do these works ourselves. There are no worries that you will be charge absurdly for the service & those Anti-foreigners will be happy when we can cut down on foreigners :s8:
I learn a lot by just having to do.. I guess I'm too cheap to hire someone and pay them 2x

Recently changed my light switch myself. Did a lot of reading, googling, YTs.

Everyone wanted to charge $200+. Those cheaper will have to wait at least a week. First question is where you stay. Then start to think how to chop your carrot. Come to my place need $130 just for transportation? They fly in meh?

Really unforgiving society these days.

that's why I change my own light fixtures.
Recently I did pay someone to install a fan for me, not because I don't know how, but because it came with the price.

Not difficult to change a light switch. Buy a similar one. Off incoming power, remove cover, test incoming supply, remove cables, reconnect cables, put back cables, switch on incoming, test lights.

I use smart switches, so it's abit more complicating. Wanted professional help but all want to chop carrot. So no choice.

The thing is, not everything can be found online. Like recently my ceiling fan rotation started slowing down. I know it can be fixed but i just can't find the model of my fan online to make a confident diagnosis.

There are so many models and versions these days.

slower rotation could be many things. carbon brush contact failure, winding failure seem most likely. Did you find out?

Nope, i read the most common issue is you need to clean the dust inside. But I don't even know how to open it. It's mostly concealed. And I can't find the model online that tells me how to open it.

My medium speed became my Low, my high speed became my medium so i use high speed now. Tong a few more years maybe change the whole thing.

nothing wrong with getting a certified person to fix their problems either.
I don't know about you. But i get quoted $100-$150 just for transportation alone. These are from those independent contractor kind.

Those big companies are cheaper, but you got to queue and wait 7-14 days.

I find very chop carrot.

Most straightforward to try. I googled.

Problems with the bearings

As time passes by, your fan might start slowing down because of the dust and dirt formed inside it. It may be hard to understand at first, but with time dirt and oil gets formed in the bearings of your fan what makes it harder for it to spin the blades. That is why you should try to clean it regularly and oil its motor and bearings as necessary in order to prevent such a thing happen.

However, if your ceiling fan has already started to slow down, you can fix it just by cleaning its bearing. The process is simple and quick. Remove the blades of the ceiling fan, if they are removable. If not, just open the fan, and clean the bearing with a wet tissue then let it dry. If the dust has formed layers, try harder to remove it with a pointy tool. Do it slowly and carefully. Make sure the ceiling fan is off when you do it and then add oil.

No choice, inflation. You also have to take into consideration that they are also earning money. Not just want to chop you carrot. transport itself is a cost. bigger companies are cheaper cause they have a bulk of customers waiting for them. its like if you dont engage me, its fine. you're not the only customer.
