Can dual GTX 980 run triple monitor setup? Or better going for 1 4k? Sorry I haven't done much research into it. Eventually I would like a triple monitor setup although to keep the initial cost down I could go with 1 first.

i currently running 3x1440p setup.
since your budget is set at 7k i think best to get a single 4k display.

my previous build breakdown(a few month back) is roughly like this
$2k++ watercool parts
$2k++ 3x dell u2713hm 1440p
$4++ z87 + i7 4770k 16gb ddr3 1200w psu 2x r290x 250gb ssd 1x 3tb 1x4tb, casing
$ a few hundred - miscellaneous like fan control, extension, sleeve etc.

if u want go to a shop to help u build, most likely they may mark up the items above and other HIDDEN/additional charges

have upgraded to 3 x gtx980 and x99 i7-5960x 1month ago to truely enjoy 3x1440p

Ok, so lets say I go for a "high end" rig as opposed to "extreme"? From what I'm reading looks like I should be waiting for GM200 GPUs or the new R9 390x before making my move as they are supposed to be a big jump? I know you can wait forever if you just keep putting things off, but its seems like it could be pretty close for GM200 maybe early next year Jan/Feb. I'm not going to wait for broadwell or skylake for sure. The rig will only be built in Dec since I'm away at the moment.

If thats the case, I can spend the money on a mobo chip and a placeholder GPU (780 ti?)
first while putting the water-cooling in place? Since I'm starting from ground zero it will help to alleviate the costs. What do you guys think? I really don't mind blowing my wad on things that last (like WC setup, Rads, PSU, HD, SSD, case etc) as long as it will last for awhile. So maybe it will be a good idea to get everything else in place and wait and see what how the GPU situation is early next year?

I thought 7k is a decent budget just for PC components and no peripherals so thats what i set for myself. The budget thing is something I have set for myself. I can spend more, but again, where does it end?

where does the budget stop depends on ur expectations. some ppl play game @ 40fps say smooth while some say 120++ fps then is considered smooth.:s22:
since u already decide 7k stick to it. 7k is quite a healthy budget.

u can go for the x99 board+ cpu(x series always last for quite long) first then get a placeholder gfx just like you said to decide whether its enough. Play afew game and see if the experience/smoothness is ok for u. Watercooling stuff can get first except the graphic card block in case you want switch to GM200 or smt else.

personally i'm waiting for gm200.. my gtx980 is a placeholder :D

Where does it really ends is very much depending on yourself. The fact are this.

Cpu have come to a close to almost no performance value in games. There is very negligible performance value from an i5 to an i7.

Next is rams. Intel dont really benefit a lot from faster rams. One could easily get away from 1600mhz rather than 2400mhz ram where the few single digit fps is a put off.

Apart from that, games are more gpu bound. Inclusive of the resolution a user wanna run. The higher the resolution the harder to run. And current gen gpus are only able to go up to 1440p display and run exceptionally well. 4k requires a graphic powerhouse and most probably need a x99 bandwidth to support more gpus. In other words. If you are just looking to game at tri 1080p or a single 1440p or dual 1440p monitors. You are able to use the mainstream boards with a dual sli or xfire gpus to run well.

I would like to run a 21:9 monitor like the LG 34UC97-S or new Dell U3415W at ultra. This is the goal for this build. Also to get most of the parts I need so the only things I need to upgrade later are just the GPUs and water blocks for them without having a bottleneck elsewhere.

awkward screen to run at, especially if you are intending to play games with it which mostly may not support this resolution.

notice that you are coming from a mac, so you might just have missed out the fun and joy of chasing after the latest technologies. but while saying that, it basically means that there is no such thing of equipment that last, with the exception of a few items that might last longer than most, psu and casing being some of the exceptions (IMHO). even for wc parts, some of which may not last as long as you think it should when you r butt itchy.... have to agree with bro hengheng220's suggestion

with your present requirements (overclocking) and budget (6-7K), my humble suggestion would be to get some items at the top spec (if you are not one of those ppl that worry abt depreciation) and some placeholders for components that you know may have a new generation incoming.

some specs that you can think abt...

Rampage V Extreme and 5960X (X99 chipset should last for 2 or more iterations of the chip unless intel decides to play punk on us with skylake)
single 980 (first as placeholder before GM200, before upgrading dual or changing totally)
16GB DDR4 (change to 32 or 64 GB when prices are better)
Plextor M6e M.2 256GB (OS drive, unless we can see Samsung XP951 on retail or 2nd hand)
1 x 256GB SSD (for programs, any will do)
1 x 3/4Tb for temporary data (get a NAS for high capacity, long term storage)
Cosair AXi 1200W
1 x 1440p monitor (for now until 4K or 5K comes down to a better price)

these will probably set you back about 5K or so (will update the exact figure later), with the remaining going to wc, which is not going to be cheap as you are looking for stuff that are not in usual local retail channels.

considering that you have a CL TH10A, we'll need to know the options that you've added into your casing in order to know the running sequence of your loop and whether you are more into aesthetics or functionality.

if you are open to the idea of 2nd hand parts, there are a lot of options in the marketplace now for your choosing also. it's just a matter of personal preference. it can also help lower your upgrading costs as your present components can be used to offset the next component investment.

apologies for long post and rant....

@Jarrax I wish i can multi like your post. Thank you for your advice.

I hear you on the parts. I think at this point, I'm looking at going dual GTX980 water-cooled.
For the ram, better get 4x4GB with the water blocks right so I can easily go to 4x8 in the future?

For the other parts I wanted not easily available, I guess this is what happens when I start looking at builds on youtube and get a part or brand in my head. Not being in Singapore (I work overseas), I can't really go to SLS or Funan and check whats available locally. Surprisingly though, the quotes I got from overseas vendors are quite competitive to what I've been quoted locally, except for the issue or GST if any and shipping charges (which will be a lot).

The monitor will be used mainly for SOM, Star Citizen, Elite which I believe all support native 3440 x 1440. I think more and more games will be supporting this resolution as we move along. Plus no bezels!

I will probably go for either Corsair 1500x or dual 1000w/600w PSU. Like you said, the PSU will not need to be upgraded that often.

As for aesthetics vs functionality, I would have to sit somewhere in between. Both to me are important when your going with a build like this and there is a fine balance. I'm more simple though, I don't want a tower with flashing LEDs fans or crazy colors (nothing wrong with those, just not my cup of tea!). Something more stealthy since the case is huge. I would probably go with UV coolant and some subtle UC lighting to highlight build.

As for the specs on my case:

MAGNUM TH10A
Gunmetal
Form Factor: XL-ATX,
Orientation: Standard,
Left Door: XXL Window CLEAR
Right Door: Solid, Top Cover: Standard Height Ventilated,
Power and Reset Switch: Standard Power/Reset Switches with Sleeved Cables ,
I/O Panel: USB 3.0/HD Audio,
PCI Backplate: Hex Mesh,
Flex-Bay Configuration: Solid Bay Covers,
Upgrade Reservoir Mounting Plate: Two Single Mounts,
Included HDD Cage Type: Standard 120 x 25mm fan (MAC-101)

Additional parts ordered:

2.5" HDD/SSD Mounting Kit (SDD)
Caster Kit - HD
Flex-Bay 5.25 Device Mount - Short Adjustable
Flex-bay 5.25 Device Mount - Short Nonconforming (Aquaero 6 XT)
PSU Support Mount - Magnum

multi quote isn't difficult. there's a multi-quote button at the end of each post, so juz make sure that's on for the posts that you want to quote before quoting.....

RAMS: X99 boards run 8 DIMM slots, so it doesn't really matter on whether you get 4x4 or 4x8. think there's even the option of getting 8x8 (if so crazily inclined) at the present moment (Geil Evo 4x8GB 2 sets). key here is to note that you'll need 2 sets of 1 RAM block with 4 spreaders and their respective barbs, which is going to take a chunk of your budget coupled with the RAM cost unless you have a cheap alternative source, thus the suggestion of getting 4x4 1st to sorta save some costing. it is presently approx SGD 25-30/GB at the present moment, which is ridiculously expensive c.f the good old days of ard SGD 5/GB DDR3 in the heydays.

for your 980, it would depend on which brand you are going to get from and if there's a block for it (i'm assuming full face). its pretty easy to add into the loop, thus its not a major concern except for the cost. another point to note is that nvidia might just play punk on us and delay the GM200 to 16nm FF+, which indicates that we'll have to wait till mid 2016 for any signs of release.

similarly, costing is my issue for the PSU. do you really need the titanium 1500w when maxwell is a power sipper? however, this comes down to personal preference and depth of pocket, so i think i should reserve my opinions on this issue. ditto to the monitor, cos it is an aesthetic opinion.

game resolution support will most probably jump to 4k as a native standard (IMHO). considering the prevalence of full HD, it is actually easier to squeeze the dpi/ppi to 4k instead of going to 1440p. the only pro for 1440p is on cost ATM.

not in SG for most of the time? the pros and cons of point of purchase will come back down to whether you care about the warranty issue in this situation. you'll also have to look at the ease of getting replacement parts when things go south. would you be flying the part (together with you) back for warranty and how would you get the replacement part?

aesthetics vs functionality is always a bugbear for any system builder. ask anybody doing custom WC and you'll probably get the same answer..... its a good thing that you have a big-ass case (i'm jealous), thus infinite possibilities are abound. my personal feel would also be UV coolant + UV lighting, with more emphasis on functionality for overclocking and heat dissipation being the top priority. might be easier if you can set a budget for WC with certain preference for brand loyalty for some or all parts (may just inflate cost significantly). you'll also have to look at pump viability, since the coolant will probably reduce the lifespan of your pump. flow rates will follow next with the loop design, leading to aesthetics.

hope it helps and apologies again for long post. seems that i have a tendency to write essays

I'm probably going to go with full EK clear for all the water blocks. Because i'm getting the system water blocked including the memory, my idea was to have both banks of the memory filled so both water blocks can be designed into the loop from the beginning. I hear you on wanting to wait for the price to drop, but again spend now or spend later, i would rather the builder get it right first time then redo myself a second time. Yes we don't need memory blocks unless we are OCing ram speed, but they. just. look. cool.

for your 980, it would depend on which brand you are going to get from and if there's a block for it (i'm assuming full face). its pretty easy to add into the loop, thus its not a major concern except for the cost. another point to note is that nvidia might just play punk on us and delay the GM200 to 16nm FF+, which indicates that we'll have to wait till mid 2016 for any signs of release.

This is the first I'm hearing of the delay. Yeah Nvidia could punk us and delay GM200 to 2016, but with R9 390x coming out, i don't think they can wait so long. More likely just a die shrink in 2016? Its pretty interesting that this is the first time in a while both companies will be (if dates 1Q 2015 are to believed) releasing new architecture concurrently so I hope that will put some downward pressure on pricing. Otherwise i will just stick with the dual GTX980 or maybe add another at that point while waiting to see which camp the winds blows. Titan II?

similarly, costing is my issue for the PSU. do you really need the titanium 1500w when maxwell is a power sipper? however, this comes down to personal preference and depth of pocket, so i think i should reserve my opinions on this issue. ditto to the monitor, cos it is an aesthetic opinion.

1500w is for peace of mind in case I go AMD in the next GPU round and they turn to be power hungry pigs. I've seen OC setups with tri SLI 780 ti's with a peak TDP of 1200+watts. Granted the 780 ti's are pigs compared to the 980s, but maybe I will get R9 390x when they are out and given AMDs previous thermal management issues, I think the extra headroom would be nice. The additional cost in the overall scheme of the rig is not that much.

game resolution support will most probably jump to 4k as a native standard (IMHO). considering the prevalence of full HD, it is actually easier to squeeze the dpi/ppi to 4k instead of going to 1440p. the only pro for 1440p is on cost ATM.

I'm interested in 4k of course (think everyone is), but its pretty early tech with early tech price/performance ratios. Not for me ATM. I think the widescreen curve display option may actually tempt more people than 4K. (just look at it!)

not in SG for most of the time? the pros and cons of point of purchase will come back down to whether you care about the warranty issue in this situation. you'll also have to look at the ease of getting replacement parts when things go south. would you be flying the part (together with you) back for warranty and how would you get the replacement part?

I'm not really too concern with the warranty as long as it last more than 6 months. Anything breaks and its upgrade time! With the base rig built i plan to do any upgrades myself.

aesthetics vs functionality is always a bugbear for any system builder. ask anybody doing custom WC and you'll probably get the same answer..... its a good thing that you have a big-ass case (i'm jealous), thus infinite possibilities are abound. my personal feel would also be UV coolant + UV lighting, with more emphasis on functionality for overclocking and heat dissipation being the top priority. might be easier if you can set a budget for WC with certain preference for brand loyalty for some or all parts (may just inflate cost significantly). you'll also have to look at pump viability, since the coolant will probably reduce the lifespan of your pump. flow rates will follow next with the loop design, leading to aesthetics.

I know next to nothing about WC. Only what I've seen in videos in the last 2 weeks or so since I decided to go full retard on getting a gaming PC. I've seen enough to know what i like aesthetically which is cube cases, clear UV, big bore acrylic tubes and dual reservoirs and pumps. And the Aquaero 6 XT...mustn't forget the Aquaero...fan curves are sexy.

For an idea of what I'm gunning for check out Singularity Computers build 10 on youtube. Older version but essentially the same case as mine. Killer rig.

hope it helps and apologies again for long post. seems that i have a tendency to write essays

Man, thanks so much for everyone's feedback! I'm learning a lot! Please keep your thoughts coming esp if you disagree with me. Like I said, I only started reading up a week or two ago so my knowledge of PCs is very shallow. And yes, sorry for being luo sou!

yup, hear you on that. EK brand loyalty? will have to make a choice between clear nickel and or clear copper for the look den. a lot more $$ needed if your are intending to do up something like Singularity build 10 though....

delay is my own personal opinion, as TSMC had just announced their 16nm FF+. if big N goes as how i think it would, they might just release this coming new generation as a rebranded placeholder and revolutionize the whole GPU market with the 16nm when yields become more stable....

I'm interested in 4k of course (think everyone is), but its pretty early tech with early tech price/performance ratios. Not for me ATM. I think the widescreen curve display option may actually tempt more people than 4K. (just look at it!)

I'm not really too concern with the warranty as long as it last more than 6 months. Anything breaks and its upgrade time! With the base rig built i plan to do any upgrades myself.

can i ask you for sponsership for my planned upcoming build log? thinking of doing a full arcylic waterfall build.... :s13::s13::s13:

I know next to nothing about WC. Only what I've seen in videos in the last 2 weeks or so since I decided to go full retard on getting a gaming PC. I've seen enough to know what i like aesthetically which is cube cases, clear UV, big bore acrylic tubes and dual reservoirs and pumps. And the Aquaero 6 XT...mustn't forget the Aquaero...fan curves are sexy.

For an idea of what I'm gunning for check out Singularity Computers build 10 on youtube. Older version but essentially the same case as mine. Killer rig.

if this is the situation, wanna start planning the items that you want to bring in from overseas and share the shipping? looking at some items for myself for the upcoming build also.... kind of in the midst of upgrading my set and lacking a lot of stuff ATM

Man, thanks so much for everyone's feedback! I'm learning a lot! Please keep your thoughts coming esp if you disagree with me. Like I said, I only started reading up a week or two ago so my knowledge of PCs is very shallow. And yes, sorry for being luo sou!

everyone learns from each other! hope that i didn't misguide you or anything with my limited knowledge

yup, hear you on that. EK brand loyalty? will have to make a choice between clear nickel and or clear copper for the look den. a lot more $$ needed if your are intending to do up something like Singularity build 10 though....

Graphics: GTX 980 SLI x2.
Case: Caselabs Magnum TH10a. (Already Owned).
PSU: Corsair AX1200i.
SSD: M.2 256GB. Samsung 850 Pro 256GB RAID 0 x2.
HDD: Western Digital Red 4TB RAID 1 x2.
Lighting: Darkside.

Water-cooling System:
Water-blocks: EK. CPU. Mobo. Graphics. Memory.
Pump: Aquacomputer D5 Aquabus x2.
Pump Modifications: Bitspower x2.
Radiators: Alphacool 480mm x4.
Reservoir: Bitspower x2.
Fittings: Bitspower Black Sparkle.
Tubing: Bitspower Acrylic.
Coolant: Mayhems.
Fans: Corsair.
LED Controller: Aquacomputer Farbwerks LED Controller
Fan Control: Aquaero 6 LT.
Filters: Demciflex.

Custom Cables, Installation, Custom paint, Overclocked.

Anyone know whats the pricing to expect for something like this? I've done some research but nothing close to what you guys who are there would know.

@Jarrax sure we can share shipping if I bring in some stuff. I just don't know what I should order and what I should buy locally. Only problem is I'm not in SG most of the time!

Waiting for Gm200 is going to suck. Nvidia will wait for AMD to drop R9 390x first I think? I thought 16nn with Finfet is only going to drop in 2016??
