Hi all, I recently booked a ticket with JAL and realised my first name and last name has been reversed. So on my passport my name is "TAN AH MING" but the ticket now reads "AH MING TAN". I called the airline and they say I have to pay SGD60 per pax for the name change, and I am very reluctant to do so :(

Is that going to be a problem when flying to and fro Japan?

Thanks.

Depending on the airline perhaps ...
Flew with SQ and budget airline , no such issue ...
when the first name and last name , in the incorrect order ...

No need to change. I always key in "TAN AH MING" but most time ticket show "AH MING TAN". No problem one.

I called JAL again and they refuse to make a note and die also say must do a name change and pay $60, to which my boyfriend said f**K it. Now it's just hoping for the best.

The check-in staff will be able to issue the boarding pass with the right name sequence.

Reservation, e-ticket and boarding pass are different things.

But the boarding pass means for your name as TEE KO (given name) LAU (family name), right?

or it means for TEE (family name) KO LAU (given name)?

I believe name wrong order happened to many people, it is really okay as long as your name is fully correct, I actually boarded a plane with a letter short before (because of travel agency mistake), but still able to board.

Each time I call, I am put on hold for no less than 30min :( called twice anyway and they both said the same thing.

Don't worry lah, relax and enjoy your holiday. During check in, they will check your passport one, so relax.

No problem one. Been in such situation.

Immigration will (probably) not deny if the order of First and Last name is swopped.

It MIGHT be a problem if your name is TAN AH MING and the airline issue ticket as MING AH TAN or TAN MING AH.

Yes - I thought it’s not really a big deal actually. For me they changed it at check in - if you think about it it’s kinda like a scam... how difficult could it be to change a name ... they just dun wan ppl to anyhow type in so lots of errors hence these stupid penalties are applied sometimes

Well, let's put it this way, how difficult is it to input the proper/correct name when buying the air ticket? the boxes are labeled, first name, family name, etc, on the reservation page.

It takes time for the check-in staff to over-ride the name in the system. Imagine taking 3 mins to do check and do for each name, and if there's 10 pax with such an error, it's a 30 mins delay.

HK immigration did away with the stamping on the passport. Each pax saves 3 seconds. 3 seconds may seem very short. But considering there were 47 million visitors last year … [much] time will be saved.

I am quite sure 50 years later will still have people to ask for the correct way to enter name

Mod can make this thread sticky

Definitely pple will ask. I myself also get mixed up a few times during some applications.

Anyway, first name = given name = ah meng (for example)
Last name = family surname = tan (for example)
