UPDATE: THANKS! for kind reply. sorry for inactive here. Im still in planning stage and heading to MBK area (watch youtube seems ok for first time traveler)

Hello first time going and intend to spend 5 days there.

Going there solo free and easy traveler.

Just have 2 small questions hope can guide.
is BKK accessible on foot? or go many places must book grab / "tuk tuk"?

watched many videos... can see bkk got many cars and a little worry that walk ways look quite crowded with street shops. still cannot conclude, and am afraid to get on their buses. I have been watching how to use their MRT (if not wrong there is two type of company?)

and.. for a first timer, which area is the recommended to stay at. as in easy to go around, evening easy to find way back to hotel and when going back wont have to travel too long to airport (Suvarnabhumi Airport). i will book a hotel around that area (budget around $30 a night, and doesnt have to be around airport area la haha)

PS newbie question. the only other place i been to solo free and easy is Taiwan <3

for first timer, you can easily go around just with BTS(skytrain) & MRT (underground). pickup copy of attractions at BTS/MRT at stations

don't do the public bus for first timer, not easy. try the river boats from accessible from saphan taksin BTS station

not familiar with hotel (me budget solo :D) so will let other fill in ... but do share what's you interested ~ sightseeing, temples, culture, shopping, cafe, food, night market etc, easier for others to make recommendations

Try to book your hotel near Platinum mall. That’s the number one thing you need to do.

Once done update here. Will proceed with step 2.

With your Budget try look at fusion suite. Walking distance to terminal 21, asoke bts/sukhumvit mrt price wise should be around your Budget.

Never take tuk tuk as you most likely end up a carrot head. Unless you wanna take once for experience.

You can always grab but does not mean it’s cheaper then cab. But asking you to stay near asoke/sukhumvit is so that you be able to travel around by train [ bts/mrt ] which should bring you to most places you wanna go.

Just like in Taipei where many would choose to stay at XMD area.
For bangkok, many would opt to stay at pratunam or platinum mall area.
Because there is pratunam market, platinum mall, centralworld, Big c supermarket. From centralworld, walk the bridge 10minutes to siam paragon. From Siam paragon, you can take one bts station to national stadium to reach MBK mall. Many 3* hotels in pratunam area, should be within your area ...

However, the nearest BTS from pratunam area is BTS Chitlom, which is about 10+ min walk away ...

Tuk tuk is expensive, normally they charge you 200b at least one way.
If taxi go by meter, is cheaper.
If not they would usually ask for 200b or 300b. try bargaining with them ...
Else you can consider taking grab ...

It's called BRT there. MRT is only what we call it here in Singapore. In Thailand, say as the Thais say. :s22:

The BRT can bring you to lots of touristy places already.. Google it.

Also, take the boats..it's fun. You can reach famous wats (temples) and even Chinatown by boat. Can Google that as well.

There indeed MRT and BTS while BRT is like a bus with fixed route and dedicated bus lane. I have yet to try their BRT thou :)

It has been a long time coming, but they have just announced that the extension to the Green Line along Sukhumwit Road to Samut Prakan will be opened on Thursday 6th December 2018*. Work started on the 13km stretch six years ago in June 2012. A year ago, they opened the first station at BTS Samrong. Now all nine stations from BTS Bearing to BTS Kheha will open on the birthday anniversary of King Bhumibol. Everyone will be able to ride the train for free until early 2019. Then the prices will be from 15 Baht to a maximum of 65 Baht. This is lower than the 136 Baht maximum that we were expecting.

So, where does the Green Line southern extension go and what is there to see along the route? Well, for one thing it goes right past my house and so I am really happy about this news. BTS Pak Nam station is only a ten minute walk from my house and Sriwittayapaknam School where I work. For tourists, they will be able to visit The Erawan Museum by getting off at BTS Chang Erawan, Navy Museum at BTS Royal Thai Naval Academy, Prakan Bay Sky Tower (not opened yet) at BTS Pak Nam, and Samut Prakan Crocodile Farm at BTS Kheha. From the terminal station, it is a six minute songtaew ride to Ancient Siam and eleven minutes to Bang Pu Recreational Center.

Just stay near BTS station will do, can be Asok (red light area and terminal 21) , Nana (red light area), Chit Lom (near to Pratunam area), Siam (more café and local small shop) and Ratchathewi (near to Pratunam area).
BTS is most use for first timer, MRT is connected to other area depend where you want to go. For places like Chinatown, grand palace, wat pho, Asiatique and etc are not located near to BTS, you can use BTS change to boat or take taxi.

As others have already said, tuk tuk is chop carrot head one, so take it for 1st experience is ok, but beware of scam that driver will recommend you some place is cheap or temple is close.

Feel free to ask more question if you have problem.

Hi,

My suggestions is to stay near (Bts) Asok /(Mrt) Sukhumvit. You can travel around Bangkok with either Bts or Mrt. They are side by side. From Suvarnabhumi Airport you can goes to basement to take Airport Rail to Makkasan then connect to Mrt Phetchaburi. Only 1 station you will reach Sukhumvit. Likewise when you want to depart Bnagkok just the other round. Hope it helps.

bangkok is easy to move about via their BTS/MRT

You can walk to most shopping centre, dont really need tuk tuk/grab.

I never book any tuk tuk or grab when i go bangkok, every place that i went is near a BTS/MRT or walking distance. This includes most of the tourist destinations and night markets.

Have fun and enjoy yourself! :D

You have to swing by Bangkok but remember that its a bit more traffic now. Christmas time. You have to give yourself 45-1Hr ahead for any appointment.
