7Singapore Government Staff Co-op1.20% p.a.12 monthsS$1,000Members only; maximum S$50,000

Best union/co-op option: AUPE Credit Co-operative

AUPE Credit Co-operative’s new rate, effective 15 July 2026, is 1.75% p.a. for eight months, with only S$500 minimum. The principal and interest are transferred to you at maturity, but premature withdrawal earns no interest.

Membership is relatively accessible:

  • Public employees working in ministries, statutory boards or organs of state
  • Immediate family members of qualifying members
  • Private-sector employees who are valid NTUC union members

Membership costs include a S$5 entrance fee, S$25 share capital and S$10 monthly subscription. The share capital and subscription are stated as refundable when membership ends, apart from the entrance fee.

Because of the membership requirements, AUPE is most worthwhile for a meaningful deposit. For example, S$10,000 placed for eight months at 1.75% earns approximately S$116.67 gross interest.

Other co-operatives

Police Co-op currently offers 1.25% for six months and 1.30% for 12 months, starting from S$500. However, membership is mainly restricted to employees of MHA-related organisations and certain associated groups. Members must also purchase S$150 of shares and contribute at least S$40 monthly to compulsory subscription savings.

Singapore Government Staff Credit Co-operative offers 1.20% for at least 12 months, starting from S$1,000 and capped at S$50,000 per member. Membership is open to staff of the Civil Service, statutory boards and government-linked companies.

Important protection difference

Bank and finance-company SGD deposits are generally insured up to S$100,000 per depositor per SDIC member. SDIC describes its scheme members as full banks and finance companies; the credit co-operatives above are not listed as SDIC scheme members. Therefore, do not treat an AUPE or other co-op term deposit as having the same statutory deposit protection as a bank fixed deposit.

My recommendation

For S$500 to S$100,000: AUPE’s 1.75% for eight months is the best rate, provided you qualify for membership and accept the lack of SDIC insurance.

For maximum capital protection: choose an SDIC-insured institution and keep your total deposits within S$100,000 per institution. Among straightforward options, Singapura Finance’s 1.55% or GXS’s 1.60% Boost Pocket are attractive; BOC’s 1.75% requires S$200,000–S$250,000 and only S$100,000 would be covered under SDIC.

Forget about FDs. Everybody should just all in to bank shares. Simple as ABC.

The govt is pumping up the bank shares for the past 2 years, and they will do more.

Read the fine prints of the structured deposit/note properly... as well as understand how they calculate their variable interests returns... Dun be surprised even if 49 of its 50 derivatives performing well but got 1 lose money... u also dun get any extra interest... Dun be fool by their "UP TO XX% interest" BIG PRINT...

Did you factor in the $10 monthly contribution to AUPE? :)
